A large part of the Career Exploration course is to help students see the opportunities in the workplace and discover

their strengths and interests. The purpose of the Guest Speaker presentation is to expose students to the various career fields available and allow them to meet and hear from professionals in those fields. Our students look forward to guest presentations. Here are some suggestions to help you plan your presentation. 1. Typical middle school students A. Like to be included B. Like visuals, graphics, and handouts C. Are bored with a lot of statistics D. Need varied activities E. Like to ask questions F. Need clear, simple and understandable answers Plan your presentation A. What are you going to do? 1. Show a film, video, or slides 2. Do a demonstration 3. Have students do an activity B. Describe your job 1. A typical day 2. Duties and responsibilities 3. Working conditions 4. Salary (beginning wage) 5. Classes that help you prepare for this career 6. An outline of your own career path 7. Explain how you decided on what you wanted to do C. Education 1. What kind of education or training is required in your field? 2. Is a high school diploma required? 3. Do you need technical training? What kind? 4. Do you need a college degree? Graduate school? 5. Is previous experience required? Is a license required? 6. What classes should students take in high school to start preparing themselves for a job in your field? D. Salary 1. What are current typical starting salaries?

Please meet your student representative at the main office to get a visitors pass 5 minutes before class starts. Plan on a 20-30 minute presentation with additional time for questions and a few minutes to close. There is a projector in the classroom along with PowerPoint and other Microsoft office products if you need them for your presentation. Feel free to bring a CD or a flash drive to load. If you need anything else for your presentation, please let me know. Our class is in a computer lab, so space is limited for student movement. I can arrange to use another room if you have physical activities planned. Please make sure that you do not bring weapons of any kind, including pocket knives on school property.
