During the 1920s, traditionalists were people who wanted to hold onto more traditional American ways and values while modernists believed that Americans should embrace new ways of thinking and behaving that better reflected a more modern age. Review Chapter 12 Section 1 that discusses postwar issues in America. Also, review Chapter 13 Sections 1-2, which discuss changing ways of life in America, specifically with regard to: Urbanization Prohibition The clash between science and religion (i.e. Scopes Trial) The changing role of women (i.e. flappers, role in workforce, role in the home) Impact of popular culture (i.e. radio, movies, jazz and blues music, sports) Increased use of the automobile The Harlem Renaissance If your last name begins with letters A-M, take on the role of a traditionalist, and if your last name begins with letters N-Z, take on the role of a modernist. Pretend you are living in the 1920s, and discuss your viewpoint on AT LEAST TWO of the topics indicated above. When you post replies, be sure to maintain your assigned viewpoint (use the first person) and consider why that group of people had such strong feelings about these issues.
