PRACTICAL EXAMINATION

A LEVEL 1ST YEAR

1. Take the metre rule and locate the position of its centre of gravity using the knife edge. Record this position. 2. Take the given known mass and put it at some convenient position on the ruler. Record the position of the mass. 3. Now balance the ruler with the known mass at the position recorded in step (2). Record the position of the pivot and hence record the distance of the centre of gravity of the ruler from the pivot. 4. Use your measurements and the value of the known mass to calculate the mass of the ruler. Mention any principle you use. 5. Now repeat steps (2) and (3) four more times to obtain the necessary further measurements to plot a suitable graph to calculate a more accurate value for the mass of the ruler. 6. Use the measuring instruments provided to calculate also the density of the material of the ruler. 7. Measurements should be tabulated. 8. Write down any precautions which you thought were necessary to ensure better accuracy in your measurements.
