This little handbook of magic purports to derive at least partly from Gypsy (Roma) traditions, and they are cited several times throughout the text. The earliest
dated printing appears to be "Glatz 1788, gedruckt bei Franz Pompejus, knigl. Stadtbuchdrucker" where the title reads: "Romanus-Bchel. Bewahre / Menschen und Vieh
vor Unglck und / Krankheit, Feuer und Wassergefahr, Diebstahl, / Verwundung durch Waffen aller Art, so wie / vor aller Zauberey in und auer dem Hause." (Johanna
Nickel in S, p. 25.) Some of the charms are also found in EG; Since EG includes errors not found in RB, it is likely that RB is the older.

1. A morning prayer, to be spoken before starting on a journey, which will save the
person from all mishaps. [H 112]
Ich (hier nenne deinen Namen) heut will ich ausgehen, Gottes Steg und Weg will
ich gehen, wo Gott auch gegangen ist und unser lieber Herr Jesus Christ, und unsere
herzliebe Jungfrau mit ihrem herzlieben Kindlein, mit ihren 7 Ringen, mit ihren wahren
Dingen, o du mein lieber Herr Jesu Christ; ich bin eigen dein, da mich kein Hund
bei, kein Wolf bei, kein Mrder beschleich, beht mich mein Gott vor dem jhen
Tod, ich stehe in Gottes Hand, da bind ich mich, in Gottes Hand bin ich gebunden
durch unseres Herrn Gottes heil. 5 Wunden, da mir alle und jede Gewehr und Waffen
so wenig schaden, als der heil. Jungfrau Maria ihrer Jungfrauschaft mit ihrer Gunst, mit
ihrem Gespenst Jesu, bete drei Vater unser und drei Ave Maria und ein Glauben.
I, [here the name is to be pronounced,] will go on a journey today; I will walk

upon God's way, and walk where God himself did walk, and our dear Lord Jesus
Christ, and our dearest Virgin with her dear little babe, with her seven rings and her
true things. Oh thou! my dear Lord Jesus Christ, I am thine own, that no dog may bite
me, no wolf bite me, and no murderer secretly approach me: Save me, oh my God,
from sudden death! I am in God's hands, and there I will bind myself. In God's hands I
am by our Lord Jesus' five wounds, that any gun or other arms may not do me any
more harm than the virginity of our Holy Virgin Mary was injured by the favor of her
beloved Jesus.
After this say three Lord's prayer, the Ave Maria and the articles of faith.

[4.] So ein Mensch die Mund- und Durchfule hat, so spreche man nachfolgendes,

My God and Lord, you mighty judge, I bid you by your rose-colored blood's
sake, that flowed from your holy sides, and 5 holy wounds that you protect and shield
me N. N. so that no misfortune comes to me or may harm me. Christ be near me and
with me, J. before me, J. beside me, J.C. be my head and protection, in the house and
yard, in the forest and on open field, before all packs of thieves and murderers, be they
visible or invisible, Christ be my guardian, protection, and shield, because you Oh
Lord, have sanctified your holy cross with your rose-colored blood. Christ be with me
and protect me all day and night from all cannons, weapons, and from all gangs and
shameful death. My Lord and God, I ask and implore you, for the sake of your innocent
death, and for the great torment that you suffered for me, a miserable sinner, on the
trunk of the holy cross, for you are the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end.
Christ's virtue overcomes all things. Christ will protect and preserve me, from now on
to all eternity, Amen.

Speak the following, and it will certainly help you: Job went through the land,
holding his staff close in the hand, when God the Lord did meet him, and said to him:
Job, what art thou grieved at? Job said: Oh God, why should I not be sad? My throat
and my mouth are rotting away. Then said the Lord to Job: In yonder valley there is a
well, which will cure thee, (name), and thy mouth, and thy throat, in the name of God

bei dem Herrn Jesu Christi, welcher gesprochen hat ber den Wind und das Meer, die
ihm auf's Wort gehorsam gewesen, durch diese gewaltige Worte, die Jesus gesprochen
hat, thue ich dir Feuer befehlen, drohen und ankndigen, da du gleich fluchs dich
solltest legen mit deiner elementischen Gewalt du Flamm und Glut, das walt das Heil.

holy, rosy blood of our dear Lord Jesus Christ, may rule it. Thou, fire and wind, and
great heat, I command thee, as the Lord did, by his holy angels command the great heat
in the fiery oven, to leave those three holy men, Shadrach and his companions Mesach
and Abednego, untouched, which was done accordingly. Thus thou shalt abate, thou
fire, flame, and great heat, the Almighty God having spoken in creating the four

Nimm Wermuth, schwartzen Kmmel, Fnf-Fingerkraut und Teufelsdreck, von

jedem Stck vor 2 Kreuzer, nimm Saubohnenstroh, die Zusammenkehrung hinter der
Stallthr zusammengefat und ein wenig Salz, alles in ein Bndelein in ein Loch
gethan in die Schwellen, wo das Vieh ein- oder ausgeht, mit Elzenbumen-holz
zugeschlagen, hilft gewi. [6]
[10.] So ein Mensch und Vieh verhext ist, wie ihm zu helfen.
Take wormwood, gith, five-finger weed, and assafdita; three cents worth of
each; the straw of horse beans, some dirt swept together behind the door of the stable,
and a little salt. Tie these all up together with a tape, and put the bundle in a hole about
the threshhold over which your cattle pass in and out, and cover it well with lignum
vit wood. This will certainly be of use.
10. How to relieve persons or animals after being bewitched. [H 122]

Gott und das Himmelrecht, hat dich gebhret eine Magd oder Dirn, so segne dich Gott
und das Himmelsgestirn, der Himmel ist ob dir, das Erdreich unter dir, du bist in der
Mitten, ich segne dich vor das Verritten, unser lieber Jesu Christ in seinem bittern
Leiden und Sterben trat, da zitterte alles, was da versprochen die falschen Juden aus
Spott schon zu, wie zittert der Sohn Gottes, als htte er den Ritter, da sprach unser Herr
Christus, den Ritter ich nicht hab, auch den wird Niemand bekommen, wer mir mein
hilft klagen und tragen, den will ich von Rittern absagen, im Namen Gottes des Vaters,
des Sohnes und des Heiligen Geistes, Amen.

Diese Worte mssen auf 3 Zettel geschrieben seyn, darnach nimm Milch von der
kranken Kuh und diese 3 Zettel, schabe etwas von einer Hafen, vermache es wohl, und
siede es recht, so mu die Hexe crepiren, [9] man kann auch die 3 Zettel abgeschreiben
in das Maul nehmen, vor die Dachtraufe hinausgehen und dreimal sprechen, darnach
dem Vieh eingeben, so wirst dir nicht allein alle Hexen sehen, sondern es wird auch
dem Vieh geholfen werden.
[20.] Vor das Fieber.

meinen Augen gehen, im Namen der heil. Dreifaltigkeir, ich gebiete euch bei der Kraft
Gottes und der Menschwerdung Jesu Christi, da du mir aus meinen Augen nicht
gehest wie Christus der Herr ist gestanden am Jordan, als ihn St. Johannes getauft
hat, diesem nach beschwre ich euch Ro und Mann, da ihr mir stehet und nicht aus
meinen Augen gehet, wie Christus der HErr gestanden, als man ihn am Stamm des heil.
Kreuzes genagelt, und hat die Altvter von der Hllen Gewalt erlset. Ihr Diebe, ich
binde euch mit den Banden, wie Christus der Herr die Hlle gebunden hat, so seyd ihr
[11] Diebe gebunden , mit welchen Worten ihr gestellt seyd, seyd ihr auch wieder
los.
Ye thieves, I conjure you, to be obedient like Jesus Christ, who obeyed his
heavenly father unto the cross, and to stand without moving out of my sight, in the
name of the Trinity. I command you by the power of God and the incarnation of Jesus
Christ, not to move out of my sight, like Jesus Christ was standing on Jordan's
stormy banks to be baptized by John. And furthermore, I conjure you, horse and rider,

about to be nailed to the cross to release the fathers of the church from the bonds of

Ngel aus einer Todtenbahr oder Hufngel, die noch nicht gebraucht sind, halt die
Ngrl gegen der Sonnen Aufgang, und spricht also:
O Dieb, ich binde dich bei dem ersten Nagel, den ich dir in deine Sirn und Hirn
thu schlagen, da du das gestohlene Gut wieder an seinen vorigen Ort mut tragen, es
soll dir so wieder und so weh werden, nach dem Menschen, und nach dem Ort, da du es
gestohlen hast, als dem Jnger Judas war, da er Jesum verrathen hatte; den andern
Nagel, den ich dir in deine Lung und Leber thu schlagen, da du das gestohlene Gut
wieder an seinen vorigen Ort sollst tragen, es soll dir so weh nach dem Menschen und
[12] nach dem Ort seyn, da du es gestohlen hast, als dem Pilato in der Hllenrein; den
dritten Nagel, den ich dir Dieb in deinen Fu thu schlagen, da du das gestohlene Gut

three nails out of a coffin, or three horse-shoe nails that were never used, and holding
these toward the rising sun, you must say:
"Oh thief, I bind thee by the first nail, which I drive into thy scull and thy brain,
to return the goods thou hast stolen, to their former place; thou shalt feel as sick and as
anxious to see men, and to see the place you stole from, as felt the disciple Judas after
betraying Jesus I bind thee by the other nail, which I drive into your lungs and liver, to
return the stolen goods to their former place; thou shalt feel as sick and as anxious to
see men, and to see the place you have stolen from, as did Pilate in the fires of hell. The
third nail I shall drive into thy foot, oh thief, in order that thou shall return the stolen
goods to the very same place from which thou hast stolen them. Oh thief, I bind thee,
and compel thee, by the three holy nails which were driven through the hands and feet
of Jesus Christ, to return the stolen goods to the very same place from which thou hast
stolen them." The three nails, however, must be greased with the grease from an
executed criminal or other sinful person.

Hlf und Troft, er hub auf seine gttliche Hand und segnete ihm den Brand, er hub, da
er nimmer tiefer grub und weiter um sich fra, so sey der Brand gesegnet im Namen
Gottes des Vaters, des Sohnes und des heil. Geistes, Amen.

Saint Lorenzo stretched out on a roast. He rendered him assistance and consolation; he

dagegen dir der Richter nicht gnstig ist, so sprich, wann du gegen ihm gehest, den
oben schon stehenden Segen.

Christus von dem gestiegen, also wenig sollst du von der Stelle laufen, das gebiet ich
dir bei den 4 Evangelisten und Elementen des Himmels, da im Flu oder Schu im
Gericht oder Gesicht, so beschwr ich dich bei dem Jngsten Gericht, da du still
stehest und ja nicht weiter gehest, bis ich all die Stern am Himmel sehe und die Sonn
gibt ihren Schein, also stell ich dir dein Laufen und Springen ein, das gebiete ich dir im
Namen Amen. Dieses mu 3 mal gesprochen werden.

selber entfernt ist.
Merk, wann der Mond neu wird, an einem Dienstag, so gehe vor der SonnenAufgang, tritt zu einem Stecken, wo du dir zuvor schon ausersehen hast, stelle dich mit
deinem Gesicht gegen der Sonnen-Aufgang, und spricht diese Worte: Steck, ich greife
dich an im Namen . Nimm dein Messer in deine Hand [24] und sprich wiederum:
Steck, ich schneide dich im Namen , da du mir sollest gehorsam seyn, welchen
ich prgeln will, wann ich einen Namen antrete, darnach schneide auf zwei Ort den
Stecken etwas hinweg, damit du kannst diese Worte drauf schreiben, stechen oder
schneiden: Abia obie, tabia, lege einen Kittel auf einen Scheerhaufen, schlage mit
deinem Stecken auf den Kittel, und nenne des Menschen Namen, welchen du prgeln
willt, und schlage tapfer zu, so wirst du denselben eben so hart treffen, als wenn er
selber darunter wre, und doch viele Meilen Wegs von dem Ort ist. Vor dem
Scheerhaufen thuts auch die Schwelle unter der Thre, so ein Schfer von Birneck an
demselbigen Edelmanne die Probe gemacht.
[58.] Besonderes Stck, gestohlene Sachen wieder herzubringen.

Beobachte es wohl, wo der Dieb heraus zu der Thr, oder sonsten wo, da
schneide 3 Spnlein in 3 hchsten Namen ab, alsdann gehe mit den 3 Spnlein zu
einem Wagen, aber unbeschrieen, thue das Rad ab, thue die 3 Spnlein in den Radnab
hinein, in die 3 hchsten Namen, alsdann treib das Rad hinter sich und sprich: Dieb,
Dieb, Dieb, kehre wieder um mit der gestohlenen Sach, du wirst gezwungen durch die
Allmacht Gottes , Gott der Vater rufet dir zurck, Gottes Sohn wende dich um,
da du mut gehen zurck, Gott der heilige Geist fhret dich zurck, bis du an dem Ort
bist, wo du gestohlen hast, durch die Allmacht Gottes mut du kommen, durch die
Weisheit Gott des Sohnes habest du weder Rast noch Ruh, bis du deine gestohlene
Sach wieder an seinen vorigen Ort hast, durch die Gnade Gottes des heiligen Geistes
mut du rennen und springen, kannst weder rasten noch ruhen, [25] bis du an den Ort
kommst, wo du gestohlen hast, Gott der Vater bind dich, Gott der Sohn zwingt dich,
Gott der heil. Geist wend dich zurck, treib das Rad nicht gar zu stark um. Dieb du

Take note when the moon becomes new on a Tuesday, then go before sunrise,
step up to a stick,2 which you have selected beforehand, stand facing the sunrise, and

under a door. This (charm) has been proven by a shepherd from Birneck (Switzerland)
against the same nobleman.
58. How to recover Stolen Goods. [H 170]

Take good care to notice through which door the thief passed out, and cut off
three small chips from the posts of that door, then take these three chips to a wagon,
unbeschrewedly however, take off one of the wheels and put the three chips into the
stock of the wheel, in the three highest names, then turn the wheel backwards and say:
Thief, thief, thief! Turn back with the stolen goods; thou art forced to do it by the
Almighty power of God: God the Father calls thee back, God the Son turns thee

und das Klare von 2 Eiern durcheinander gemacht und bergeschlagen, ist approbirt.

Wie der Sohn dem Vater gehorsam war bis zu dem Tod des Kreuzes, also behte

welche er am Stamme des Kreuzes bekommen und erlitten hat, also mu ich los und

73. How to Free Yourself of all Ropes and Fetters. [EG, p. 188]
Just as the Son was obedient to the Father unto his death on the cross, thus protect
me, the eternal God to-day, by his rose-colored blood, through his holy five wounds,
which he received upon the cross, just so I must be loosened and blessed, as the cup
and the very heavenly bread which Jesus offered unto his twelve disciples on Holy

God greet ye, brothers of good cheer [Wohlgemuth = gemtvoll]. Ye have drank
of Christ's blood. This I have drank for your own good. God the Father is with me. God
the Son, he is with ye. God the Holy Spirit be between us two and be with us all that no
one be able to draw the sword from the hilt. Lord Jesus I am thine. I lean myself upon
the help of God the Father. I commend myself to the sweet name of Jesus Christ
who is above me. As true as the Lord liveth and soars above, so true will his holy
angels protect me with his love and protect my going in and coming out, hither and
thither. God the Father be my power. God the Son be my strength. God's holy angels
defy and chase all my foes and all bands of thieves, and protect me against all ills and
grievances. As sun and moon stood still at Joshua's command, when he fought the
Philistine's on Jordan's strand. Three roses stand upon the dear Lord's brow, the first is
