DRUG STUDY DRUG NAME CLASSIFICATION DOSAGE MECHANISM OF ACTION Live BCG vaccine is an attenuated strain of bacillus CalmetteGurin;

used for active immunization against tuberculosis. INDICATION CONTRAINDICATION ADVERSE REACTIONS Small, red tender swelling at site of inj developing to a small vesicle & then an ulcer in 2-4 wk. Occasionally, enlargement of axillary lymph nodes may appear 2-4 mth after immunization. SC inj produces abscess w/c may lead to retracted scars. NURSING RESPONSIBILITIES Assess client for allergic reactions (eg, rash, trouble breathing). Assess client with compromised immune systems, such as those who are infected with HIV/AIDS. Assess clients for common side effects (eg, redness at injection site, fever, abdominal discomfort).

Bacillus GalmetteGurin Vaccine or BCG Vaccine

Vaccines, Antisera & Immunologicals

Adult & childn >1 yr: 0.1 mL Childn <1 yr & newborn: 0.05 mL All doses given intradermally.

Active immunization or prevention of TB.

Serious illness or high fever, malnutrition, progressive dermatitis, serious heart, kidney or liver disease, serious cellmediated immune deficiency. Childn w/ clinical AIDS.
