September 21, 2012

Dear Mr. Michael T. Duke: We are a coalition of workers' centers, student groups, community organizations, labor organizations and women's centers around the country. We are writing you today in support of the courageous women who dared to take a stand and organize against sweatshop conditions where they worked, at a Pactiv Corporation plant in New Jersey. In our communities and our workplaces, we have seen the devastating impact of sweatshop practices promoted by Pactiv Corporation and Reynolds. Pactiv forces workers to do overtime and has instituted speedups to the extent that workers were unable to even use the restroom. The workers faced retaliation when they complained about this and other health concerns to management. Pactiv was so ruthless, ultimately firing the forty most outspoken workers almost all women, forcing the remaining workers to take up the slack giving them 60% more work. I am enclosing copies of the fact sheet and a recent news article. Reynolds Group's Pactiv Corporation is clearly one of this country's worst sweatshop companies. In fact they are in violation of standards # 1, # 4, # 6 and # 7 of the Walmart Standards for Suppliers. We urge you to send a letter to Reynolds and take a stand against sweatshops in the U.S. Tell them to reinstate the workers immediately to the Kearny factory, stop forced overtime, and treat their workers humanely. We look forward to seeing a copy of the letter once you have sent it to Reynolds. Sincerely yours,

Karah Newton Coordinator for the Aint I a Woman!? Campaign
