Hunter/Lucey MAPPING MADNESS TEST To: L.U.C.E .Y..

(Land Use Consultations by Environmental Youths ;-) ) Fr : The WHS Environmental Science Classes ****************************** Part 1- Background Information : The following scenario is designed to provide you with background information pertinent for the selection of the stadium site. Answer the five background information questions at the end of this scenario on your answer sheet. Scenario: Congratulations! Your firm (L.U.C.E.Y.) consisting of site planners, engineers, architects, and environmental analysts, has been awarded the contract to locate a site for our latest project, a 40,000 seat stadium for the new professional co-ed Envirothon league team: the Connecticut Ambiguities . Wilton Connecticut has been chosen because of its proximity to the major highways (CT. RT. 15, I-95 , CT. RT. 7, I-84) linking Connecticut to New York , New Jersey and Massachusetts . The site must be large enough to accommodate the stadium complex, parking, two restaurants, and an access road to the complex . We estimate the optimum size at approximately 160 acres ( 160 acres = 1/4 square mile). Our marketing research reveals that the optimum geographical location would be on the Norwalk North Quadrangle topographic map in Connecticut. A 30% state grant will be used to offset the initial construction costs. The domed stadium will be heated by a geothermal heat exchange system utilizing ground water (Miller 6 t h edition, p 425-428*). Using the 110-story, twin-towered Wor ld Trade Center in Manhattan as our monument to waste (it uses as much electricity as a city of 100,000 people for only about 35,000 employees), how will you make your buildings energy use as efficient as possible (Miller, 6th ed. p 403-407)? Either on-site septic or a dedicated sewage treatment plant will have to be constructed. Regardless, you must decide on its level of purification- primary sewage treatment, secondary sewage treatment or advanced sewage treatment (Miler 6th ed. p 531). The facility will need water for normal sanitary use (e.g. toilets, cooking and cleaning). You must investigate the option of connecting to a public water supply (Miller, 6th ed. sections : 18-4- reservoirs to supply water; 185- watershed transfers ; 18-6 -tapping groundwater ) or settle on drilling wells to supply the facility. We have received your initial prospectus identifying 2 potential sites for the stadium. Please provide us with your recommendations for the final site as soon as possible. You will be responsible for obtaining all applicable permits for construction as well for compliance with local, state, and federal regulations during construction. In your response we will expect to see any and all data that has been collected one each site pertaining to the topography, slope, the status of wetlands, any information regarding drainage as wells drainage basins that will be affected, any discharge sources that will either be affected by us or we might be affected by, any water quality issues either pro or con, and all the information that you can provide about the soils and issues that might come along with them. There will not be 'one ideal site' on the Norwalk North Quadrangle Map to locate your 160 acre 40,000 seat stadium. There will be some factors that make the site that you have chosen ideal and at the same time other factors that work against your choice.
