The life of an employee at a mine .. Johan is growing up in a mining town. The mine his dad is working for has a sustainable development program that gives nutrition to the Early Childhood development schools. When he was 5 he received his first colouring book from the mine that educated him on good nutrition and the importance of good sleep, thats why he and his sister need to be quieter when their dad is working night shift and sleeping during the day. At the age of 10 he received a comic book from the mine that also educated him on good nutrition and the importance of exercise. When he arrived in high school he received his third book from the mine which is a comic book that talks about shift work at the mine, sleep hygiene and being fit for duty. After being appointed by the mine, Johan receives several training classes in fatigue upon induction, is immediately working a safe schedule and learning about Lifestyle planners, Prism and Astid which is going to assist him and his co-workers to stay alive and to go home at the end of each shift Zero Harm. Johan receives news from his foreman that his wife is having a baby and goes to the hospital and sees the nurse with a card and flowers in her hand. The nurse sees the card is from Anglo American. She says your mine must care a lot about you and Johan states they have cared for me my entire life.

ECDs nutrition
Johans mine has a Sustainable Development Program which feeds him breakfast and lunch and 1600 of his friends from ages 2 - 5

Education Grade R - 3
Johan receives a coloring book from the mine when he is 5 years old that teaches him to be respectful and quiet when his dad is working night shift

Education Grade 4 - 7
When Johan is 10 years old the mine brings in comic books and educates him about the importance of good nutrition and exercise

Education Grade 8 - 12
When Johan is 14 years old the mine brings in comic books and education on how to adjust your body to shiftwork and be a better safer employee for the mine some day

Induction - training

When Johan is hired by the mine after school he first receives induction training that explains to him safety on the mine. He next watches a video on fatigue management skills.

Bio Roster
In fatigue training Johan learns of the term Bio-rostering which refers to the pre-emptive management of fatigue by taking individual schedules and rearranging days and times to make them safer e.g. in a typical DDNN schedule, employees come to work 5 days a month with 0 3 hours sleep. This is equal to a blood alcohol content (BAC) of 0.07 0.08. When the pattern is changed to DDXXNNN, this takes high risk fatigue out of the schedule.

Prism
Johan learns that there is a software system at the mine that can alert the foreman who there most fatigued worker is down to the least fatigued so safe rested workers can be traded with fatigued ones it is a Proactive and predictive fatigue management tool:

Monitors and identifies fatigue risk on individual basis Assesses fit for duty at clock-in and predicts fatigue risk for the shift Scientifically validated alertness test for secondary affirmation of performance Provides for inclusion of off the job fatigue related factors Provides feedback process to track fatigue mitigation actions

Lifestyle planners

Johans foreman gives him a LSP which assists shiftworkers to plan their lives. Teaches them when to sleep when they work day or night shift, when to eat and when to exercise. It take the guess work out of shiftwork.

Climate control

Johans supervisor tell him that the heat and cooling is adjustable in his vehicle but if he turns the heat up too high it will cause fatigue. He learns that 21 - 22 is the ideal temperature.

Astid
Johan is assigned to drive a 777 dumptruck that is equipped with Astid to keep him safe. (Advisory System for Tired Drivers)
Astid analyses driver / vehicle interactions through steering corrections. It is build on sound scientific research into sleep and sleepiness by Loughborough Sleep Research Centre, world renowned for its work into the effects of driver fatigue.

12

Nutrition

Nutritional meals for the shift workers are now going to be tested on the mine (all the different shifts) to provide the shiftworkers with the most sustainable energy. This will further the employees ability to combat fatigue. Johan can already feel a difference.

Johan, your company sent flowers to you to celebrate the birth or your first child! Yes, my company took care of me when I was growing up, and they still look after us .
