Assessment Plan

Lesson Objectives: Part One: The students will know the items and places in a community. They will know the things that exist in their local community. The students will understand why these things in their communities are important to their community. Part Two: The students will demonstrate that they know how the geography affects the community development, the people, and the environment. The students will also demonstrate how the land is used with in their local community. Part Three: Finally, the students will show that they recognize a map, where our state is on a map, and also where our community of greenwood is located on our state map. Assessments: Pre-Assessment: Before beginning to teach the lesson, the children will be asked to list items/places that they see or use often in their local community. I will use this to know if the students are ready for the next part of the lesson about how these things affect our community. The student have to know what is in our community first before we can see how it affects the community so I will use this assessment to see if the children understand the first part of the lesson. Mid-Assessment: At first there will be a class discussion on the things the students listed. The discussion will also consist of how these items affect our community. Students will then be placed in groups of three and asked to write in complete sentences how they think the items we discussed before affect our community. Ex. If we didnt have trash cans we would have nowhere to put our trash, so our community will stink and our environment will be unclean. Post-Assessment: 1) Show the students pictures of items and places in our community and ask them to tell you in words how these items affect our community. How do the items and places on the board affect our community? If we did not have these items and places what would happen? Since we do have them what are they used for? (pick on item or place) 2) Ask the students How is the land in our community used? Ask the students to draw a picture of how they think the land in our community is used.

3) Give the students a map of South Carolina with the outline of the counties. Ask the students to place an X on the map where their local community is located (Greenwood). I will use this assessment to see if the students understood what was taught, or if I need to reteach a concept or specific information. I will also use this to see if the students understand this enough to be ready for what they will need to know and what they will use in third grade.

Format of Formative Assessments: As the students are writing their sentence or sentences about how the places and items we talked about affect our community, walk around the room with a check list of the students names and check beside their name if they are doing as they were told and if they seemed to comprehend the lesson through what they write for their sentence or sentences. At the end of each lesson, as a review and a way to see if the children grasped the concept of the lesson, ask questions based on what was taught in the lesson and receive oral feedback from the students. When the children act out different ways our land is used, (ex. pretending to be a tree/forest) observe to see if the children are actually acting out items that were named when teaching the lesson.

Accommodations: For all of the students that are visual, the smart board will be used to write or draw examples on. For the children that learn through hearing the instructions and information given will be repeated several times. For ESOL students the instructions and information will also be repeated several times. For all of the students the teacher will walk around and assist when help is needed.
