COP consisted of all Governmental and Regional organizations that have ratified the Convention Two week meeting with complex agendas was conducted on a biannually Till 2006 eight ordinary and one extraordinary meeting was held Who attends COP ??

Official delegates from different backgrounds were selected. Usually minister of environment heads the team in consultation with other governmental departments Other sectors influence the official representatives by providing information and contacts

Thematic programs, Cross-Cutting Issues and SBSTTA


Between meetings COP authorized programs of work were carried out by formal or ad-hoc working groups SBSTTA Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice

An intergovernmental advisory board composed of experts of diverse fields

By 2006 seven thematic programs of work encompassing major eco system had been organized Program = Potential Outputs + Timetable + Means to achieve

Developing countries lacked resources to fund biodiversityrelated projects Developed countries shall provide new and additional financial resources Global Environmental Facility(GEF) was designated as main funding mechanism

Funded by donor nations(every four years) Since 1991 grants of $6.2 billion was provided Generated $20 billion in co-financing for more than 100 projects in 140 developing countries Total 500 biodiversity conservation projects worth $2 billion Concern that funding was on a decline

2002 32 donor nations - $3billion
