The games were held at the Chungmu Art Hall 2nd Floor Basketball Court from 4 oclock in the afternoon up to 7 oclock in the evening. The first game of the day was the Womens Volleyball game between HFCC B Team and Daerim Team. This was the first game played by both teams in the tournament. HFCC B Team beat the Daerim Team by winning two straight sets. The second game was a no-bearing Mens Basketball game between Green (HFCC A) and

White (PPFI) teams. The Green Team had only four players present on the court when the game started. Since, this was a no-bearing game, it was allowed to be played in the spirit of camaraderie. The White Team won the game beating the Blue team by 6 points (42 36). The third game was a Do-or-Die Mens Basketball game between the Blue (HFCC B) and Violet (Daerim) teams. The Blue team beat the Violet team by as much as 19 points (43 24). This gives the Blue team the right to battleit-out with the Green Team for the tournaments championship honors. The games may be intense and competitive but everyone in the venue had a great time. The battle for the basketball finals will be announced by the HFCC sports committee.

HARANA DOCUMENTARY READY TO TAKE ON THE GLOBAL STAGE AT BUSAN INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL AND HAWAII INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL After its critical success at the Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival in Manila this past July, the highly anticipated documentary HARANA is set to dazzle at two major international film festivals this October. HARANA makes its international premiere at the 17th Busan International Film Festival, competing in the Wide Angle Documentary section with screenings taking place on October 5th, 7th and 11th. Considered to be one of the most prestigious festivals in Asia, HARANA joins a festival that focuses on introducing a wide array of films from all around Asia. HARANAs US premiere will be at the 32nd Hawaii International Film Festival with screenings on October 14th and October 18th. The film has been nominated for the Halekulani Golden Orchid Award, which is bestowed upon the narrative and documentary films that best express artistic and technical excellence and promotes crosscultural understanding. The Philippines' tradition of harana has been rapidly vanishing in its home country and most people throughout the world are completely unaware of its influential music that for many years had inspired the Philippine country with hope, beauty and love. Harana was a traditional form of courtship in which men serenaded women by singing underneath her window at night. It is famous for its set of protocols, a code of conduct and most importantly, a specific style of music. An important custom of Filipino culture, harana has been teetering on the edge of disappearance for some time, but through the untiring and valiant efforts from a group of filmmakers, harana has been given a chance for survival. World music guitarist Florante Aguilar along with producer Fides Enriquez and director Benito Bautista have created HARANA, a documentary that captures the search for this musical tradition and its remaining practitioners. Together, they discovered Felipe Alonzo, Celestino Aniel and Romeo Bergunio, three men living simple lives in obscurity in the Philippine countryside but who exemplify the definition of a true harana master. They are plucked from their humble surroundings and thrust into a world where their gifts as haranistas could once again be appreciated for all its worth. Through their remarkable journey, the film is both a celebration and a preservation of a tradition that will once again ignite the passion and treasure that is HARANA. lessed Pedro Calungsod (c. 1654 April 2, 1672) was a young Roman Catholic Filipino sacristan and missionary catechist, who along with Spanish Jesuit missionary Blessed Diego Luis de San Vitores, suffered religious persecution and martyrdom on Guam for their missionary work in 1672. Calungsod was beatified on March 5, 2000 by Blessed Pope John Paul II. On February 18, 2012, Pope Benedict XVI officially announced at Saint Peters Basilica that Calungsod will be canonised on October 21, 2012. Very little is known about Pedro Calungsod. Historical records never mentioned his exact place of origin or who his parents were. He was merely identified as a teenage native of the Visayas in the Philippines. Historical research identifies Ginatilan in Cebu, Hinunangan and Hinundayan in Southern Leyte, and Molo district in Iloilo as probable places of origin. Loboc in Bohol also makes a claim. Moreover, no one even really knows how Calungsod looked like. Calungsod is often depicted as a young man wearing a camisa de chino. He holds the martyrs palm, indicating his death, or sometimes a crucifix, catechism book or rosary, representing his missionary work. Few details of his early life prior to missionary work and death are known. It is probable that he came to one of the schools run by Jesuits, where he learned Catechism and Spanish language. Nevertheless, we can be certain of Calungsods ecclesiastical provenance since the entire Visayas region was under the old Diocese (now Archdiocese) of the Most Holy Name (Cebu). MISSIONARY WORK Pedro was just one of the boy catechists who went with San Vitores from the Philippines to the Ladrones Islands in the western North Pacific Ocean in 1668 to evangelize the Chamorros, according to www.pedrocalungsod.org. In that century, the Jesuits in the Philippines used to train and employ young boys as competent catechists and versatile assistants in their missions. The Ladrones at that time was part of the old Diocese of Cebu. Calungsod, then around 14, was among the young exemplary catechists chosen to accompany the Jesuits in their mission to the Ladrones Islands (Islas de los Ladrones or Islands of Thieves). Around 1667, these were later named Marianas (Las Islas de Mariana) in honor of Queen Maria Ana of Austria who supported the mission. Life in the Ladrones was hard. The provisions for the Mission did not arrive regularly; the jungles were too thick to cross; the cliffs were very stiff to climb, and the islands were frequently visited by devastating typhoons. Despite the hardships, the missionaries persevered, and the Mission was blessed with many conversions. The first mission residence and church were built in the town of Hagta in the island of Guam. MARTYRDOM According to Jesuit Martyrs in Micronesia written by Francis X. Hezel, SJ, the Jesuit mission in the Mariana Islands was the first in Oceania; it soon also proved to be one of the bloodiest. On 15 June 1668, San Vitores and a band of five other Jesuits arrived on Guam, the south-

ernmost and largest island in a cordillera of fifteen volcanic islands. With the missionaries came a garrison of thirty soldiers, many of them colonials from the Philippines, whose responsibility was to protect the missionaries and to pacify the local people if need should arise. At this time, Spanish missionaries were actively converting Chamorros to Roman Catholicism. This relationship was peaceful at the beginning with the Spaniards, who were led San Vitores. The initial reception of the missionaries by the Chamorro people was enthusiastic and reassuring. However, that changed over time when Chamorros grew resentful of the way their language and other customs were being replaced. Chamorro deaths had also increased due to foreign-borne illnesses. (www.guampdn.com) Very soon, a Chinese quack, named Choco, envious of the prestige that the missionaries were gaining among the Chamorros, started to spread the talk that the baptismal water of the missionaries was poisonous, www.pedrocalungsod.org explained. And since some sickly Chamorro infants who were baptized died, many believed the calumniator and eventually apostatized. The evil campaign of Choco was readily supported by the Macanjas who were superstitious local herbal medicine men, and by the Urritaos, the young native men who were given into some immoral practices. These, along with the apostates, began to persecute the missionaries, many of whom were killed. The most unforgettable assault happened on April 2, 1672, Saturday just before the Passion Sunday of that year. At around seven oclock in the morning, Pedro by then already about seventeen years old, as can be gleaned from the written testimonies of his companion missionaries and San Vitores came to the village of Tomhom [Tumhon; Tumon], in Guam. There, they were told that a baby girl was recently born in the village; so they went to ask the childs father, named Matapang, to bring out the infant for baptism. Matapang was a Christian and a friend of the missionaries, but having apostatized, he angrily refused to have his baby christened. Meanwhile, despite the growing distrust and animosity between Chamorros and the Spanish, San Vitores and Calungsod visited Matapangs home and baptized Matapangs daughter. It is unclear whether San Vitores came unannounced or if he had been invited into the home by Matapangs wife. To give Matapang some time to cool down, Padre Diego and Pedro gathered the children and some adults of the village at the nearby shore and started chanting with them the truths of the Catholic Faith. They invited Matapang to join them, but the apostate shouted back that he was angry with God and was already fed up with the Christian teachings. Determined to kill the missionaries, Matapang went away and tried to enlist in his cause another villager, named Hirao, who was not a Christian. At first, Hirao refused, mindful of the kindness of the missionaries towards the natives; but, when Matapang branded him a coward, he got piqued and so he consented. When Matapang learned of the baptism, he became even more furious. He violently hurled spears first at Pedro. The lad skirted the darting spears with remarkable dexterity. Witnesses said that Pedro had all the chances to escape because he was very agile, but he did not want to leave Padre Diego alone. Those who personally knew Pedro believed that he would have defeated his fierce aggressors and would have freed both himself and Padre Diego if only he had some weapon because he was a valiant boy; but Padre Diego never allowed his companions to carry arms. Finally, Pedro got hit by a spear at the chest and he fell to the ground. Hirao immediately charged towards him and finished him off with a blow of a cutlass on the head. Padre Diego could not do anything except to raise a crucifix and give Pedro the final sacramental absolution. After that, the assassins also

killed Padre Diego. Matapang took the crucifix of Padre Diego and pounded it with a stone while blaspheming God. Then, both assassins denuded the bodies of Pedro and Padre Diego, dragged them to the edge of the shore, tied large stones to their feet, brought them on a proa to sea and threw them into the deep. Those remains of the martyrs were never to be found again. The companion missionaries of Pedro remembered him to be a boy with a very good disposition, a virtuous catechist, a faithful assistant, a good Catholic whose perseverance in the Faith even to the point of martyrdom proved him to be a good soldier of Christ. (www.pedrocalungsod.org) BEATIFICATION A year after the martyrdom of San Vitores and Calungsod, a process for beatification was initiated but only for San Vitores. Political and religious turmoil, however, delayed and eventually killed the process. In 1981, when Agaa was preparing for its 20th anniversary as a diocese, the 1673 beatification cause of Padre Diego Lu de San Vitores was rediscovered in s the old manuscripts and taken up anew until Padre Diego was finally beatified on October 6, 1985. It was his beatification that brought the memory of Pedro to our day. Beatification is the act by which the Church, through papal decree, permits a specified diocese, region, nation, or religious institute to honor with public cult under the title Blessed a Christian person who has died with a reputation for holiness. In 1994, then Cebu Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal asked permission from the Vatican to initiate a cause for beatification and canonization of Pedro Calungsod. In March 1997, the Sacred Congregation for the Causes of Saints approved the Acta of the Diocesan Process for the Beatification of Pedro Calungsod. That same year, Cardinal Vidal appointed Fr. Ildebrando Jesus A. Leyson as vice-postulator for the cause and was tasked with the compilation of a Positio Super Martyrio to be scrutinized by the Sacred Congregation for the Causes of Saints in Rome. The positio, which relied heavily on the documentation of San Vitoress beatification, was completed in 1999. Blessed John Paul II, wanting to include young Asian laypersons in his first beatification for the Jubilee Year 2000, paid particular attention to the cause of Calungsod. In January 2000, he approved the decree super martyrio (concerning the martyrdom) of Calungsod, setting his beatification on March 5, 2000 at Saint Peters Square in Rome. (www.wikipedia.com) SAINTHOOD On December 19, 2011, the Holy See officially approved the miracle qualifying Calungsod for sainthood by the Roman Catholic Church. The recognised miracle dates from 2002, when a Leyte woman who was pronounced clinically dead by accredited physicians two hours after a heart attack was revived when a doctor prayed for Calungsods intercession. Cardinal Angelo Amato presided over the declaration ceremony on behalf of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints. He later revealed that Pope Benedict XVI approved and signed the official promulgation decrees recognising the miracles as authentic and worthy of belief. The College of Cardinals were then sent a dossier on the new saints, and they were asked to indicate their approval. On 18 February 2012, after the Consistory for the Creation of Cardinals, Cardinal Amato formally petitioned Pope Benedict XVI to announce the canonization of the new saints. The Pope set the date for 21 October 2012 (World Mission Sunday). After Saint Lorenzo Ruiz, Calungsod will be the second Filipino declared a saint by the Roman Catholic Church. month ago, Inang Bayan Initiative released our first video via the World Wide Web through You Tube. We started inviting everyone to be involved with this initiative. Many from the invitations we posted include this invitation: Theres a dream that lies in every childs smile but not everyone is given the same opportunity. We ended the video by saying that we can do something. We also invited everyone to participate MAKIISA. We then released videos every week with the total of four videos and more updates will be posted for a long term commitment to serving and giving back to our country specifically to our hometown. The invitation is timely since this era awaits initiatives towards service for our country as it needs serious help towards education. Data shows that education is considered to be one of the most important sectors in any country. One way of assessing a countrys performance is by measuring its literacy rate. Nations which have the highest number of educated people are the most advanced states in the world. Furthermore, surveys have shown that success in life is associated with higher educational attainment. Unfortunately, across the globe, illiteracy remains a serious problem in many of the worlds poorest countries where the vast majority of residents struggle to read and write. Compared with other countries, the literacy rate in the Philippines is quite high. The enrollment rate in the Philippines is 99.9% in the primary level and 77.8% in the secondary level, which is higher than Singapore, and highest among the Association of Southeast Asian Nation (ASEAN) countries. Records of the countrys National Statistics Office (NSO) show that 58 million out of the estimated 67 million Filipinos aged 10 to 64 years old are functionally literate, which means that 86.57% of Filipinos can read, write, compute, and comprehend. According to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Philippines has the highest literacy rate among the ASEAN countries. However, while statistics on literacy and enrollment may be high (education index), the economic situation in the Philippines is still in turmoil. The Philippines might have been successful in improving its education in terms of quantity, but in terms of quality, the data is showing otherwise. The quality of education in the Philippines is steadily deteriorating and its negative effect upon the countrys economic, social, and political condition is becoming more evident. The severe erosion in its educational standards as reflected in low scores of Filipino students both local and international aptitude tests, lack of classrooms and facilities, shortages of books and errors of facts in them, poor performance of teachers, inaccuracies in lectures, etc. indeed raise an alarming call that clearly seeks genuine change in the current system. It is the kind of change that will intensify childrens rights to better education. But due to huge budget constraints in resolving the abovementioned problems, the Philippine Government will not be able to resolve these issues alone. The severity of the problem requires intervention from private entities to better improve its current state. Inang Bayan Initiative advocates the importance of giving back to the country by dedicating a part of ones talent, time, money and effort to help underprivileged young Filipino children access to a higher quality of education. The initiative aims to increase awareness about the growing importance of Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE); to increase awareness on the what and how of the 21st better early-childhood education; to increase awareness on cultivating future talents; to increase awareness towards the innovation of education; especially to offer training of school teachers and administrators. To address these current needs is easier said than done. The Inang Bayan Initiative with the help of everyone who will be willing to be involved MAKIISA is a way to realize the goal of providing better education to Filipino children both in long and short terms. We strongly believe that we can never do this alone without everyone. Our vision and mission could only be possible with everyones involvement. So lets all be part of this initiative and be involved! Mission We establish links between Filipinos abroad and those who are in the Philippines. We create networks that will strengthen the value of community involvement in setting up stronger cooperation among the public. By making the people understand the value of education in their lives, the movement seeks to encourage more and more people to look back to where theyve started and share whatever resources they can give.

What is the difference between being redeemed and being saved?


Full Question Karl Keating stated in his book Catholicism and Fundamentalism that we are all "redeemed" but we are not all "saved." What is the difference between the two? Answer Basically, redemption is collective, while salvation is individual. Christ redeemed humanity collectively from slavery to sin and from the debt of punishment that mankind, as a whole, owed due to sin. Every person, Christian or non-Christian, is redeemed because he is a member of the human race. Salvation is the application of redemption to individuals. Paano mo masasabi na tama o kulang pa ang binibigay mong pagmamahal, panahon at oras sa isang taong mahal mo para manatili ito? Hindi ko rin maintindihan minsan. Kahit ako maraming tanong sa bawat pagkakataon na maramdaman o maranasan ang mga bagay pagdating sa pagibig o kung paano magmahal. Sapat na nga ba ang pagmamahal lang? Kahit ginagawa mo na lahat para sa isang taong mahal mo, na halos kung minsan makalimutan mo na ang sarili mo para mapatunayan mo lang sa kanya na mahal mo sya sapat na nga ba? Nakakasakal nga ba kapag nagmahal ka ng sobra? Yung tangi mo lang hangad maging masaya kayong pareho? Ang hirap bigyan ng basehan pagdating sa pag-ibig. Minsan sa tingin mo ay tama, pero may mali pala. Minsan naman sa tingin mo sapat na, subalit kulang pa rin pala. O kung minsan sobra- sobra naman kung magmahal tayo, kaso nakakasakal naman . Ang gulo, ang hirappero sa dulo ng lahat ng ito may kaligayahan pa rin tayong nararamdaman. Lalo na kapag tunay mo itong nararamdaman, na walang pagkukunwari o alinlangan. Kaya nga natin harapin ang lahat maipaglaban lang ito kung minsan, ng dahil sa pag-ibig kaya nating gawin lahat. Kaya siguro ang Diyos binigay niya ang kayang buhay para sa atin dahil sa pagmamahal niya ng sobra sa atin. Tinuruan niya tayo kung paano magmahal sa kapwa sa lahat ng pagkakataon. Maging masama o maganda ang pakita sa atin. Magmahal ng walang katumbas o walang hinihintay na kapalit. Yan ang pag-ibig ng Diyos - dakila, pati buhay ibinigay para sa kaligayahan at kaligtasan ng lahat.

Tayo kaya bilang isang tao na nilalang ng Diyos kaya ba nating magmahal kagaya nya? Minsan sinasaktan tayo ng mga mahal natin o iniiwan. Siguro kaya tayo iniiwan kasi baka may bagong darating na mas okey, na mas mamahalin tayo, yung taong hindi tayo sasaktan at paaasahin. Yung nagi-isang taong magtatama ng mga mali sa atin, ng lahat ng mali sa buhay natin. Pero minsan hindi rin naman masamang piliin mo na hanapin ang sarili mo, o mahalin din natin ang sarili natin ng konti. Hindi naman ibig sabihin noon, hindi mo na sila mahal. Pinili mo lang gawin o tignan ng malayo kung ano ang ikakaganda pa ng relasyon. Minsan kasi sa sobrang pagmamahal nawawala na ang pagkatao natin, yung sarili natin. Baka nga sa pagkakataon na yun mas mabuo ang sarili mo at kaya mong magmahal muli ng tama at wlang paga-alinlangan. Sabi nga nila: it takes two people to break-up so they can grow-up, it takes two grown- ups to make the relationship work. .. hindi nga lang pagmamahal lang ang mararamdaman para manatili ang relasyon sa dalawang taong nagmamahalan. Maraming dahilan, maraming dapat harapin, at kilalanin di lang ang taong mamahalin mo pati na rin lalo ang sarili mo, kasi sa tingin ko kapag marami ka pang hanap o marami ka pang gustong gawin, hindi mo magagawang magmahal ng buo dahil hindi pa buo ang pagkatao mo. At mahirap maging masaya kung isa lang ang may gusto. Dapat pantay o pareho sa nararamdaman ng bawat isa. Ikaw masasabi mo ba sa sarili mo na nagmamahal ka na ng totoo at sapat na ba ang pagmamahal lang para tumagal? Nahanap mo na ba ang taong masasabi mong siya na at wala ng iba o wala ka ng hahanapin pa.. Mahirap sagutin ng diretso... may alinlangan pa rin kahit papaano. Dapat wala ng what if tinanong mo na ba sarili mo? Kung sapat ba ang pagmamahal lang?

Malapad na kasi ang ating mga kalyo sa palad sa kakukudkod sa paglilinis. Malapad na rin ang listahan ng utang na babayaran sa pamasahe sa labas ng bansa. At lalong malapad na rin ang mga mukha natin sa pagharap sa sermon ng ating mga amo. Mali ata si Kristo. Malapad, hindi mapalad. Sa kabila ng trahedyang ito, maniwala ka man o sa hindi, tunay na mapalad - kayo. Dahil kung susuriin natin, kayoy hindi basta katulong lang. Kayoy mga espesyal na taong may di matatawarang dangal 1. Mapalad kayong naglilinis sa mga bahay ng inyong amo, kayong naglalaba ng mamahalin nilang damit, at nagluluto ng kanilang maseselang pagkain. Kayoy hindi lang katulong, kayoy kanilang KATIWALA. 2. I. Review and Overview


Let's start this lesson with some review: We're studying salvation history - the story that the Bible tells - by studying the covenants, which form the "backbone" or the "skeletal structure" of the Bible. In the ancient world, covenants established family relationships. The covenants God makes in the Bible do the same thing. By His covenants, God establishes a family relationship with His creatures, the human people made in His image and likeness. By His covenants, He was - and still is - fathering a family. Through the covenants of the Bible, He bestows His blessing - a share in His divine grace and life - upon His people. By this blessing, He makes us more than simple creatures. He makes us true divine heirs and offspring - sons and daughters. We're studying this history to understand better and to live better the New Covenant, which He gave to us in the person of Jesus Christ, and which we entered into through Baptism. And all of the covenants we read about in the Old Testament history of the Bible are intended to foreshadow, to anticipate and point to, the New Covenant. Picking up the story in the Bible: As a result of the original sin of Adam and Eve, the family that God desired was fractured and divided. There was now a constant tension between those who doubt God's promises and seek to glorify their own name, that is, to live outside of God's family, and those who "call on the name of the Lord," that is, those who desire to live as His children (see Genesis 4:26). This tension reaches a head in the Tower of

Babel episode we looked at in the last lesson where the peoples of the world try to "make a name for themselves." As Adam and Eve sought to live without God, to be "like gods" themselves, now men and women acting together as one people have begun to do the same thing (see Genesis 11). But in the verses immediately following Babel, we're introduced to Abram or Abraham. (For simplicity's sake, we're going to refer to him as "Abraham" throughout this lesson, even though he's called " Abram" until God changes his name in Genesis 17:5). Abraham is called to reject the ways of those who would exalt themselves and try to make a name for themselves. If he follows God in faith and obedience, God promises to exalt him - to make his name great (see Genesis 12:2). With Abraham, human history becomes salvation history. Until now, our history was headed to a dead end, toward death, a return to the dust from which man was first fashioned (see Genesis 1:19; Catechism, no. 1079-1080). By his faithfulness, Abraham becomes the father of a new generation of men and women, a generation that lives by faith in the promises of God, as trusting sons and daughters. Abraham, God promises, will be "the father of a host of nations" (see Genesis 17:5). Through his descendants, he will be the bringer of divine blessing to all the nations of the earth (see Genesis 12:3). What is the blessing that God wants to bestow? The gift of divine sonship. These promises of God, which we focus on in this lesson, are fulfilled in Jesus, who is, as we read in the very first line of the New Testament, "the Son of Abraham" (see Matthew 1:1).

the books of Exodus through Deuteronomy. God's second oath is fulfilled when David is made King and promised with a great name (see 2 Samuel 7:9) and an everlasting throne (see Psalm 89:3-4; 132:11-12). And finally, these covenants point us to Jesus. His New Covenant fulfills God's promise to make the children of Abraham the source of blessing for all the nations. That's why in the very first line of the New Testament we find the words "Jesus Christ...the son of Abraham" (see Matthew 1:1).

B. Beloved Sons
In the famous biblical canticles of Mary and Zechariah, we're told that the coming of Jesus fulfills the promises that God swore to Abraham (compare Luke 1:55, 72-73 and Genesis 12:3; 13:15; 22:16-18). Jesus is the descendant of Abraham in whom the blessings of divine sonship will flow to all the nations of the world. Jesus Himself taught us to see a symbol of His coming in the birth of Isaac: "Abraham your father rejoiced to see My day; he saw it and it was glad." Of course, Abraham didn't literally see Jesus' day. He rejoiced at the birth of His heir, Isaac (see Genesis 17:7). But Jesus is telling us that in Isaac we should see a foreshadowing of His own birth. Beginning within the Bible and coming to full flower in the writings of Church Fathers like St. Augustine, many have seen deep connections between the life of Isaac and the life of Jesus. Isaac's birth is a miracle - coming as it does to a 100-year-old man and his barren wife. So Jesus is born by divine conception. As Isaac is circumcised to enter into membership in the chosen people of God, so is Jesus (see Luke 2:21). There is an even more profound symbolism in the awful test that God gives to Abraham - to offer his only beloved son, Isaac, as a sacrifice. This story has long been interpreted as foreshadowing God's offering of his only beloved Son on the Cross at Calvary. First, notice in the story how many times the words "father" and "son" are used (see Genesis 22). Isaac is described as the only beloved Son of Abraham (see Genesis 22:2,12,16). Page ahead to the New Testament and you'll find God using these same words - "my beloved Son" - to refer to Jesus at two crucial points in His life, in His Baptism and Transfiguration (see Matthew 3:17; 17:5). This language is not coincidental. It's the clue to what's going on in the Abraham story, which is one of the most difficult to understand in the entire Bible. Without this clue, we're left to draw cruel conclusions: How could God require anybody to sacrifice his only son - or any son, for that matter? What kind of God would demand such a test of loyalty? But this test, like so many things written in the Old Testament, was written as a "figure," to teach us a lesson about the loving plan of God (see 1 Corinthians 1:11; Romans 4:23-24). The writers of the New Testament clearly understood that this story was not about a cruel God who asks believers to do horrifying things to serve Him. They knew that in the story of the

II. Our Father Abraham


A. Big Promises
God's covenant with Abraham has three parts, and it begins with three promises: to make Abraham a great nation (12:1); to give him a great name (12:2); and to make him the source of blessing for all the world (12:3). God later "upgrades" these three promises turning them into divine covenants. God swears not only to make Abraham a great nation, He also makes a covenant in which He promises to deliver Abraham's descendants from oppression in an alien country and give them a specific portion of land (see Genesis 15:7-21). Not only will his name be great, but God by a covenant oath swears to make Abraham "father of a host of nations," a royal dynasty - "kings shall stem from you" (see Genesis 17:1-21). God elevates His third promise by swearing to make Abraham's descendants "as countless as the stars of the sky and the sands of the seashore." In Abraham's descendants "All the nations of the earth shall find blessing" (see Genesis 22:16-18). By these three covenant oaths, God points our eyes to the future of salvation history. Abraham is made a great nation in the Exodus, when by the covenant He makes with Moses, God makes Abraham's descendants into a nation possessing the land promised to Abraham (see Genesis 46:3-4). father Abraham and his son Isaac, God was revealing to us something of the mystery of His own divine fatherhood. God twice praises Abraham's faithfulness "You did not withhold from me your own beloved son" (see Genesis 22:12,15). St. Paul cites the Greek translation of these exact words when He talks about the Crucifixion - "He who did not spare His own Son but handed Him over for us all..." (see Romans 8:32). We can also hear an echo of God's praise in the famous Scripture from the Gospel of John: "God so loved the world that He gave His only Son..." (see John 3:16). And there are other, more subtle, parallels, as well: For instance, the mountain where God tells Abraham to perform the sacrifice: Mount

Moriah is in the same place that Melchizedek came from - Salem. In fact, Jewish tradition holds that Moriah is the site atop which Solomon built the Lord's Temple (see 2 Chronicles 3:1). In fact, Jewish tradition also holds that the name "Jerusalem" comes from attaching Abraham's word of faith - God "will provide" (see Genesis 22:8; Hebrew = yir'eh or jira) to the word Salem. Calvary, where Jesus was crucified, is one of the hills of Moriah. And as Isaac carried the wood for his own sacrifice, and submitted to being bound to the wood, so too will Jesus carry His cross and let men bind Him to it. Jewish tradition believed that Isaac was between 27 and 35 at the time of this event and that he willingly allowed himself to be bound and offered by Abraham. This would suggest

an even further parallel between Isaac and Jesus - both giving themselves up, freely accepting their own death as an offering to God. Abraham's words to his servants: "We will worship and then come back to you" (see Genesis 22:5) can be heard as a promise of resurrection. Why did he say "we," if he expected that Isaac would be slain? The Letter to the Hebrews explains that it was because Abraham had faith in the resurrection: "He reasoned that God was able to raise even from the dead, and he received Isaac back as a symbol" (see Hebrews 11:17-19). In fact, Isaac is spared, as Jesus will be, "on the third day" (see Genesis 22:4). To be continued

he Feast of Christ the King was established by Pope Pius XI in 1925 as an antidote to secularism, a way of life which leaves God out of man's thinking and living and organizes his life as if God did not exist. The feast is intended to proclaim in a striking and effective manner Christ's royalty over individuals, families, society, governments, and nations. Today's Mass establishes the titles for Christ's royalty over men: 1) Christ is God, the Creator of the universe and hence wields a supreme power over all things; "All things were created by Him"; 2) Christ is our Redeemer, He purchased us by His precious Blood, and made us His property and possession; 3) Christ is Head of the Church, "holding in all things the primacy"; 4) God bestowed upon Christ the nations of the world as His special possession and dominion. Today's Mass also describes the qualities of Christ's kingdom. This kingdom is: 1) supreme, extending not only to all people but also to their princes and kings; 2) universal, extending to all nations and to all places; 3) eternal, for "The Lord shall sit a King forever"; 4) spiritual, Christ's "kingdom is not of this world". Christ the King as Represented in the Liturgy

The liturgy is an album in which every epoch of Church history immortalizes itself. Therein, accordingly, can be found the various pictures of Christ beloved during succeeding centuries. Overseas Absentee Voting Registration Deadline on 31 October 2012


Filipinos in South Korea who intend to vote in Korea for the senatorial and party-list elections in May 2013 are reminded to register as overseas absentee voters at the Philippine Embassy in Seoul on or before 31 October 2012. All Filipinos, regardless of status of stay in Korea, are eligible to register for the 2013 elections. Registrants only need to present a valid proof of Philippine citizenship, such as a passport. Registration started on 2 November 2011 and will continue until 31 October 2012. Registration may be done at the Philippine Embassy from Sunday to Thursday during regular office hours, except during declared holidays.

Procedure on Date of Appointment: Step 1:

Check your name on the list of applicants with appointment Complete all information on the passport application form Wait for your name and number to be called at Window 4 Submit the application form and present your old Passport and photocopies OPTIONAL : If you wish to avail of the courier service, get a courier form and write your name and complete return address. Get a copy of the courier form. Payment will be made upon delivery of your ePassport. Have your old passport canceled by the consular officer. Go to cashier and pay the exact amount of US$ 60.00 in cash. No check may be accepted Keep your receipt and show it when you claim your ePassport in person after 6 weeks. Go to the encoder for encoding of data, picture taking, taking of thumb marks and digital signature. Applicant should be in decent attire. Both ears should be shown Keep your receipt of payment and bring your old passport for cancellation to claim your ePassport. You can also authorize a representative to claim your passport by giving authority at the back of y o u r claim receipt.

A child born in the Republic of Korea with Filipino parent/s should be reported to the Philippine Embassy in Seoul , not later twelve (12) months from the date of birth, for transmittal to the Office of the Civil Registrar-General, National Statistics Office (NSO), Manila. Report of the birth of a child after one year is considered late and an Affidavit of Late Registration shall be required. Requirements for ROB 1.Duly accomplished ROB form in 4 original copies 2.Birth Certificate issued by the Korean hospital where child was born ( with English translation) 3.If child is legitimate, marriage contract of parents. If marriage was in the Philippines, marriage contract must be authenticated by NSO. If abroad, copy of Report of Marriage duly received by the Philippine Embassy with jurisdiction to register the marriage. 4.If not married, NSO authenticated birth certificate of mother. If the surname of the father will be used, Affidavit of Admission of Paternity and Authority to use surname of Father will be required from the father. Republic Act 9255 allows illegitimate children to use the surname of their father. (Notarization fee of affidavit is Won 33,550) 5.Valid passports/ travel documents of the parents 6.If parent/s are naturalized Filipino/s, naturalization documents are required 7.If reporting is done after twelve (12) months from occurrence, Affidavit of Late Registration of Birth. (Notarization fee of affidavit is Won 33,550) 8.Consular Fee: Won 33,550 Processing period: two (2) working days Original documents will be required upon processing together with four (4) photocopies. Photocopy of a document will be accepted provided they are authenticated/ certified true copy (CTC) by DFA or the nearest Philippine Embassy or Consulate. The Consulate may require additional requirements , if necessary.
