Unit/Topic: Science Key Learning Area: Science Strand: Science inquiry skills Sub-strand: Planning and conducting

Date:___31/10/12_____ Year Level:__7______

LESSON OUTCOME:
Year 7
Collaboratively and individually plan and conduct a range of investigation types, including fieldwork and experiments, ensuring safety and ethical guidelines are followed (ACSIS125) In fair tests, measure and control variables, and select equipment to collect data with accuracy appropriate to the task (ACSIS126)

Achievement standards: Identify questions that can be investigated scientifically. They plan fair experimental methods, identifying variables to be changed and measured. They select equipment that improves fairness and accuracy and describe how they considered safety.

LESSON STRUCTURE:
Time 10 mins Introduction (Set): Introduction:
Now before we begin our experiments I need to make sure that you truly understand the purpose of why we are conducting and experiment, and why we need to ensure that we conduct a fair test using variables. Now, you need to understand that I will be marking you against the Australian curriculum. SHOW CURRICULUM WEBSITE achievement standards If you fail to identify correctly what your variables are, you cannot possible get a C for identifying variables and planning a fair test. Because you havent made the connection between the two.

Teaching Approaches 5E Instructional model: Engage- stimulate

interest and curiosity, promote questioning and connect learning to real world experiences. The teacher structures tasks, elicits students prior knowledge and supports them to make connections to past learning experiences.

(Write responses on Smartboard) Teaching Approaches

Explore- The teacher presents
challenging tasks to support students to generate and investigate questions, gather relevant information and develop ideas Explain- The teacher provides strategies to enable students to connect and organise new and existing knowledge.

I have found this YOUTUBE video which I hope will give some of you a better understanding about variables, and why we need to change one (independent), control many (control) and measure one (dependent): Scientific variables video YOUTUBE Stop at each one Note book comparison

Conclusion: I will give you 5 minutes to look again at your investigation planners and see how well you have identified each variable and equipment you need.

Teaching Approaches
Evaluate- assists students to
evaluate their progress and achievements. They support students to reflect on their learning processes
