Active Shooter Response, by Chris Grollnek An active shooter is a person, usually armed with a gun or guns, who is attempting

to kill or injure people in a populated, confined area. Most people will never face an active shooter situation, but everyone should know the basics of how to respond if they do. These are recommendations from the Department of Homeland Security: - Evacuate: Keep in mind a plan for an escape route, and do not worry about taking your belongings with you. - Hide: Find an area out of the shooter's view, silence your cell phone (do not set it to vibrate), and, if possible, barricade or lock the door. - Take action: This is a last resort. If your life is in immediate peril, try to incapacitate the attacker; you can throw items or aggressively attack. When it seems safe to take out your phone, call 911. About the author: Chris Grollnek is a former Marine and law enforcement officer with more than 20 years of experience. He specializes in consulting with victims of malicious prosecution and their attorneys.
