Glenn Mitterman, Advisor, University of Oregon UNICEF Campus Initiative YiHsuan Yang, Co-president, University of Oregon UNICEF Campus Initiative Feb. 6, 2012 Walk for Water event proposal

The UN-Water World Water Day is scheduled for March 22, 2012. To spread awareness about issues surrounding freshwater and to celebrate this years World Water Day, I hope to lead a University of Oregon UNICEF Campus Initiative to help UNICEF Tap Project fundraising for Togo, Vietnam, Mauritania, and Cameroon. Moreover, I am considering coordinating with Portland Global Initiatives to schedule their Walk for Water event in our community of Eugene-Springfield. I wonder your thoughts on this idea. Portland Global Initiatives is a nonprofit located in Portland, Oregon. The agency focuses on the global water crisis affecting communities around the world. Its annual Walk for Water event near World Water Day aims to educate Portland community as well as to fundraise for NGO's around the world. The Walk for Water event invites participants to take water-gathering containers and to begin a walk around the Willamette River. Simulating a typical water-gathering experience for women and children in sub-Saharan Africa, walkers will haul water throughout their 3.1 mile route. I realized the need to make U of O students aware of freshwater scarcity. I think, through Walk for Water experience, students will gain an appreciation on the need for freshwater and an awareness of the importance of using freshwater sustainably. You may check Walk for Water event website: http://www.worldwaterdaypdx.com/, and an Oregonian article about Walk for Water event from last year: http://blog.oregonlive.com/pdxgreen/2011/03/walk_for_water_grab_a_bucket_f.html Thank you for your consideration. I look forward to hearing your thoughts.
