How Fast Is Your Reaction Time?

1) Question: How fast is your reaction time?

2) Research: Bibliographical info:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/science/humanbody/sleep/sheep/reaction_version5.swf http://www.brianmac.co.uk/rulerdrop.htm

3) Hypothesis:

I think a humans average reaction time is 1 second because for example if you are playing dodge ball and you take 2 seconds or more to react that the ball is coming then your are dead in the game already because you take a long time to react if you react in 1 second you can dodge the ball and not get hit.
4) Materials for test(Ruler Drop): Meter stick Science Partner Time Chart 5) Procedure: Get all your materials Partner A holds the ruler and the Partner B catches the ruler Partner A drops the ruler in a surprise Then partner B catches the ruler After the partner B catches the ruler use the time chart to check how long does partner B react Write the data and the observation down 5.2) Variables:

Independent: We will change that you have to do left and right hand. Dependent: How long is a average human reaction time? Controlled: You still use the ruler, measure the time, time chart and still going to drop and catch and still same surface. 6) Data Table: Right hand:
Trial 1: Trial 2: Trial 3: Trial 4: Average Reaction time for humans :

0.20 second

0.12 second

0.18 second

0.15 second

0.1625 seconds

0.19 second

0.22 second

0.20 second

0.18 second

0.1975 seconds

7) Data & Observation: My left hand took a long time to react after the ruler dropped. When my science partner drop the ruler I dont really catch it I drop it.Then if I do my right hand I dont really struggle. My partner didnt struggle when she did her left hand but when she did her right hand she did struggle. Average reaction time 1.21 seconds. 8) Discussion:

What did you change in your lab? Same as us using left and right hands. What did you learn about reaction times?

Juliana: eeeeh I learned that that Im pretty fast. Clare: Yeah your awesome. Did you nd the lab difcult? Why? No because I found it kinda fun. Did you make mistakes in the lab? Yes, We both miss the hand. 9) Conclusion: My Partner Celia and I did a Project on reaction times on 12/11/12. We approximately took 4 or 5 days. We did this project because we wanted to know our different reaction times. I learned that there are a lot projects you can do at home and they can be homemade. I learned about the ruler test and the reaction times for my partner. I think a humans average reaction time is 1 second because for example if you are playing dodge ball and you take 2 seconds or more to react that the ball is coming then your are dead in the game already because you take a long time to react if you react in 1 second you can dodge the ball and not get hit. We used our right and left hand so we can compare our reaction times and see how different our reaction times are. The variables were alright we didnt do anything wrong. We were successful because we were very lost about what to do for independent. Celia had an idea we do left and right hand. For dependent we had the unit question. For controlled we didnt change anything. The variables made everything easier. At rst I thought it was confusing. I kept dropping the ruler with my left hand.

Average

The Data Table Here Represents How Many Milliseconds It Took Me To React. The Blue is my left hand and The purple is my right hand. My average for both hands is 1.21 seconds. I learned that my right hand is quicker than my left hand and it took me a long time to notice. I think a humans average reaction time is 1 second because for example if you are playing dodge ball and you take 2 seconds or more to react that the ball is coming then your are dead in the game already because you take a long time to react if you react in 1 second you can dodge the ball and not get hit. I think I was correct not really because my average for both hands is 1.21 seconds. I was right because I didnt take 2 seconds. or more. The most important concepts I learned in this progress was reaction times projects. At rst I thought there was only one test that is not a computer game. I enjoyed doing the ruler test.

I enjoyed it because it was the time me and my partner started laughing randomly. I didnt really think about what to change. Their is no need to change anything. I didnt really thought about any nal thoughts.
