ofafeaturefilm.Inthepast19years,shehasbecomeanawardwinningArtDirectorand

KazimirwasborninChicago,Illinois,in1976.Hebegancomposingmusicinhighschooland
receivedhisBachelorofMusicinCompositionfromtheUniversityofIllinoisatUrbana-Cham-
paign.AftercompletingtheUSCgraduateprograminfilmandtelevisionscoring,Kazimirspent
ayearassistingHansZimmer.Kazimirhasestablishedareputationasaproductivecollabora-
tor,whichhasledtomultipleprojectswithmusicalluminariesA.R.Rahman,CraigArmstrong,

Caylin Cervetti, born in Iowa, performs, creates, and lives in Nashville, Tennessee. The Film

who wants in, they struggle to maintain sanity in their hell by imagining
the world outside. Gilbert, however, returns home to spend time with his
beautiful daughter and loving wife, both of whom adore him. The next
dayisdecisiveforGilbertsjobanup-and-comingfemaleauthorisonthe

storiesIrealizedacentralquestionwasbeingneglected:Whywerepeopledoingthis?

Withtheanswercametherealizationandshockthatthepeopleinvolvedwerenotthousandsofmiles
awaybutwithinourowncommunity,andtheywerenotallconsciencelessmonstersdriventodestroy
innocentlife,butratherwerehumanbeingsdesperatelylookingforawayoutoftheirtrappedlives.

Inmakingthisfilm,Ihaverealizedalotaboutoursociety.Weareveryquicktolookatthosewho
doevilanddemonizethem,demandingtheharshestpunishment.However,eachofthesepeople
hasastory,perhapsevenbeingavictimofsimilarcrimes.Canwetakeonemomenttotryandsee
apersonshumanity?Becauseeveniftheremustbejusticeforthoseperpetratorsinvolved,wemust
notrobthemoftheirhumanity.Whenweseepeoplebeyondtheircrimeourresponseoftenchanges
fromvindicationtocompassion,fromrevengetoadesireformercy.Thatisthediscussionthatthis
filmservestocreate.

Forifwedesiretoseethisheinouscrimeremovedfromourworld,wemustaddressthedemand.To
framethestoryfromthisperspective,Iwantedtoshowanindividualwhoknowswhatheisdoingis
wrong,yetislostinhisinabilitytofindawayout,andthedailyhellofthevictimsslavery.Mydesire
wastoshowthereisnowaytoisolatethesupplyfromthedemand,andtherealitythatbothsides
areprisonersintheirownrightlongingtobefree.

FeelingwhattheCharacterFeels
Wewerefilmingthesecondtolastsceneofthefilm,whichiswhenGilbertfinallycomesintothebedroomwith
Nina.TherewasalotofemotionbuiltupforCaylin,theactressplayingNina.Itwasabout1am,andafter12
hoursofshootingtherolehadtakenalotoutofher.Thiswasasceneshewasnotlookingforwardtoplaying
becauseofwhatitrequiredemotionally.However,Itookherasideandsaid,Tryandimaginewhatitmustbe
likefortherealgirlswhohavetogototheirlastclientofthenightaftercountlessbrutalexperiencesthatday
anddoitonemoretime.Imaginethatdreadandpain.Thiscausedhertogetintoaveryintenseemotional
statethecharacterreallyrequiredinthatmoment.Icouldtellthiswasgoingtobepowerful.Itwasalmostlike
Iwantedthecamerasandlightstodisappearbecauseitwassoreal.Theveryfirsttakewasperfect.Therewas
atangibleenergyintheroomandshehadtearsstreamingdownherfacewhenwefinishedbecauseshewas
reallythereinthatplacethatthecharacterwas.Itwasaverypowerfulmoment.
HardestScene
OneofthescenesIwasmostnervousaboutwasthemasturbationsceneattheoffice.TheproducersandIre-
allywantedthescenetohaveaveryrawfeelingtogivetheaudienceasensethattheyarestuckwithGilbert
inthatmoment.Soitwasshotwithalongtakewithjustonesetup.ThescenenotonlyhasGilbertmasturbat-
ing,italsohashimbreakingdownafterthefactbecauseoffrustrationwithhimself.MattCoale,theDirector
ofPhotography,wassetupjustafootfromJessejames,theactorplayingGilbert,andIwassweatingbecause
itwasascenethatreallyhadtobeperfecttocreatetheemotionthescenerequired.ItoldJessejamesIwanted
himtohitthestalldoor,butIwantedhimtoexplorethemomentemotionallyandseewhathewoulddo.As
thescenestartedhebegantoreallybuilduptothatclimaxmomentandthenexplodedwithsuchapowerful
emotionofbrokennessandfrustrationyoucouldhaveheardapindrop.Ilookedoveratthecrewandyou
couldtellnoonewantedthescenetoend.Youcouldtellbytheirreactiontherewassomethingpowerfulhap-
pening.Itwasaspecialmoment.
