Poverty and crime increase as illiteracy is ignored On a daily basis we view scenes of crime and poverty from the

news to YouTube clips. While viewing these devastating scenes have we ever thought about the cause behind all the heartbreak? It may come as a surprise that illiteracy is one of the leading causes of poverty and crime nationwide. Over 44 million people are illiterate and many are still in the dark as to why that matters. Studies have proven that illiteracy is directly linked to juvenile delinquency, health care costs and prison enrollment to name a few. Family Literacy Centers has a plan to combat the rising crisis of illiteracy. Members of FLC have traveled all across the nation visiting communities where crime and poverty are prevalent. These communities have asked FLC to help establish and maintain a literacy program that helps both underprivileged children and adults. The facilities being established are often located in churches because they are free for local communities and usually reach out to all denominations. Through these literacy centers FLC can help in eliminating poverty and crime. However, to take on such a large effort FLC will need funding from others. The big push to recruit new donors stems from FLC needing to establish reading centers nationwide. These centers have the latest computerized testing materials, practice manuals, trained teachers and tutors that can serve in many locations. There are literally millions of forgotten illiterate U.S. citizens throughout the United States who are trapped in various stages of illiteracy, Harrington said. Those of us who are literate have a difficult time even imaging the darkened captivity of those who cannot read.
