How is constructed and how it works

Construction
A plasma panel is two sheets of 1/16 glass

observer

The glass is shown here in edge view

Uniform spacers separate the sheets of glass

observer

The spacers also create R-G-B sub-pixels

Transparent electrodes are coated inside the glass

observer

Two on the front and one on the rear

Phosphor is coated into the inside of the rear glass

observer

This phosphor resembles CRT phosphor

The sub-pixel is filled with a mixture of Ne+Xe

observer

A voltage differential is created between the front electrodes

observer

A voltage differential is created between the front electrodes

observer

The resulting electric field adds energy to the gas mixture

A second voltage is applied to the rear glass electrode

observer

This electric field changes the gas to plasma state

The change of state to plasma releases ultraviolet energy

observer

The change of state to plasma releases ultraviolet energy

observer

The UV excites the phosphor and it emits visible light

This process repeats itself over 1.2 million sub-pixels to produce the bright, high contrast image
