The Ideal Home and Garden beautifully brings together a wholesome home furnishing concept that is artistically subtle, realistically affordable and relevant with the 21st century style conscious urban society. Flipping through the magazine, you would know what I am talking about. From interior furnishings to utility-decoratives, an information rich content in reader-friendly layouts is what essentially sums up this handy magazine from the workshop of Next Gen Publishing. Its a magazine worth picking out from the stalls and investing in. It is an ideal buddy or help you set up a new home to redesign your existing one. For all its simplicity, relevance, value and aesthetic maturity it is on my list of things to read and review! Aniruddha Bhattacharya, Mumbai

The sixth anniversary of The Ideal Home and Garden issue was brilliant. Every page popped out with delight! The three supplements were just awesome. Each supplement was loaded with information and home dcor ideas. I would like to thank the entire team of the magazine for bringing out such wonderful and cheerful supplements. Three Cheers! Ankit Sonawane, Thane, Maharashtra

SO-LACE INDEED!
Your excellent November issue couldn't have come at a better time. I was helping my Mum do a bit of 'autumn cleaning' when we chanced upon an old forgotten box in the loft. It turned out to be an Aladdin's lamp of sorts layer upon layer of exquisite and ohso-pretty laces, of all shapes, sizes and colours painstakingly made by my late grandmother! As the magazine had carried a comprehensive feature on lace furnishings, we had a wonderful time spreading those gems over all our tables. You should have been there to hear the oohs and aahs... Thanks once again. Roopa Khurana, Agra

NOSTALGIC TIMES
Congratulations on your baby turning 6! May you grow from strength to strength and keep up the good work. You and your team should be very proud of the November issue which was packed with information and made for the perfect read! I loved all the articles and the three special supplements. The Retro Hues and Romancing Lace left me nostalgic. The winner for me was definitely the beautiful, elegant and drool worthing home of Faiza Seth. Maryann Pereira, Pune

ARCHITECT PROFILE

AWESOME DESIGNS As a second year student of architecture, I attended exhibitions at Delhi's Pragati Maidan. It was there that I first realised the uniqueness of design. I was in awe of the free flow of forms, volumes and the grand structures that spelt grander living. The greatness of the human mind and its ability to create spaces that make an unforgettable impression simply amazed me.

BRILLIANT STREAK My journey as an architect for the past 18 years has been nothing short of exciting. When I started off in Mumbai as a fresh grad in 1994, I worked with several renowned architects on various residential, commercial, healthcare and hospitality projects. I started my own firm MJDS in October 2002 with my wife Jhankar, who is also an architect. And 10

years since, our portfolio includes an array of successful projects from residential apartments,

bungalows, hotels, malls to hospitals, clubs restaurants, offices and more.

Architect Manu Goel talks about the brilliance that a free and creative mind armed with knowledge can achieve.

GOODNESS GRACIOUS! Design for me is a space that is transformed into a piece of art with a distinctly visible purpose. It ought to effortlessly fulfil its core need. Planning an effective space is the key to a good design. Depending on the type of occupants, the technical aspects should be dealt to perfection. To design is like doing the work of God. It's a creation of
28 The Ideal Home and Garden December 2012

a space, happiness and positive energies. It's the possibility of creating a beautiful place to live in. A home is the simplest, and also the most complex form of design experience for any architect. The human mind loves to explore and experiment. Understanding this is the key to a good home interior design.

ARCHITECT PROFILE

EVOLVED TIMES Learning is the core of evolution and thus a platform for new development. As architects and creators, it is very important for us to keep ourselves updated with the latest technological advancements. Attending educational seminars and new product launches are a must for every architect, new or seasoned. MY MEDIUMS I prefer using pencil and sketch pens to jot down the orders that my mind transmits. For me, the development of any space is volumetric, and hand sketches prove to be the most effective and trustworthy companions to continuously create something new. CREATIVE CREATURES Creativity is an absolutely relative term. I think, it is related to exploring the unknown. A term which tells me to go beyond the tangible. The wavelengths of the mind cannot and should not to be measured. It has to be free flowing. In short, creativity is a state of mind!

SIGHTS ON TOMORROW Architecture is a beautiful and fulfilling field. We create and build. The most important thing is to work in tandem with the forces of the universe. Our designs

should be such that they complements our environment without overpowering it. Armed with an amazing mind and technology, we can do wonders and create architectural marvels that are safe and healthy for our future generations.

etting the perfect festive mood also involves indulging those olfactory senses. It's about time you immersed your home in serene fragrances that are luxurious, scrumptious and inviting! Scented candles and air fresheners often produce of artificial scents and do not lend that same freshness. A better and natural alternative is to do what perhaps your grandmother did take out all those ingredients like cinnamon sticks, orange rinds, cloves, vanilla, anise, and nutmeg and make your home smell like you've been baking all day! So, here are seven natural ways to keep your house smelling great!

42 The Ideal Home and Garden December 2012

featuRe

CINNAMON
the spicy warmth of cinnamon has been used across many centuries for its aromatic purposes. add a handful of cinnamon sticks along with a few cloves to boiling water and let the steam fill the air with a pleasant warm fragrance. you could also wrap a few sticks around a candle and allow the heat to pull out the aroma from the cinnamon sticks.

CITRUS
Citrus fruits add a very natural and sweet aroma to the kitchen. as soon as you cut into a lemon, the fragrance instantly hits your senses and uplifts you. fill bowls with lemon and orange slices and place them throughout the house. alternatively, you can add a few slices of oranges and a handful of cinnamon sticks or star anise to water and bring the concoction to a boil to release the aroma of the fruit.

44 The Ideal Home and Garden December 2012

featuRe

LAVENDER OR EUCALYPTUS
lavender is still the goto scent for an uplifting home ambiance and instant aromatherapy. dried eucalyptus and lavender are the most common fragrances that people pick. they look pretty in vases, and will add a comforting scent to your room. hanging eucalyptus in the shower will allow the steam to bring out its soothing, spa-like scent. use cotton balls dipped

in lavender or eucalyptus oil and dab them lightly on the light bulbs in your room. the heat will slowly pull out the scent and make your whole room smell heavenly.

VANILLA BEAN
When youre in a mood to fill the air with a rich vanilla scent of something baking in the oven, you dont necessarily have to bake a batch

of cookies. a few pods of vanilla beans is all you need! vanilla beans have the most aromatic and distinguishable scent and adding a few in boiling water or just placing them in the room is enough to let out that sweet fragrance.

PINE CONES OR NEEDLES

do you like the smell of pine and fresh trees that rolls around during Christmas? Well, a few pine cones and a sprinkle of cinnamon on it, placed in a bowl can let you relive that instantly. Pine trees have a very distinct natural aroma that lasts for a long time and gives your house a very fall-like fragrance.

COFFEE BEANS
if you love the aroma that hits you as soon as you enter a coee shop then you are in luck! Putting a few beans in a bowl and placing them in your room not only adds the scent to the air but it also absorbs odours. you can fill a vase with coee beans and place it on your desk to release an invigorating and appealing fragrance. adding a few drops of vanilla bean extract can make it smell even better!

SPICE BLENDS
spices make the house smell inviting and warm especially during winters. allspice used even while cooking fills the entire house with its intense aroma. a combination of spices like anise, nutmeg and allspice can instantly give your home a freshout-of-the-oven scent. sprinkle the mixture onto your oven sheet and bake it for a few minutes or just put it over an incense burner to let the smell slowly waft through the room.

And So To Bed

With a nip in the air and the need for warmth, this is the perfect time to turn your fireplace into a stunning dcor option as well as the focal point of your evenings! Our experts tell you how...

Casa

still has a special place... True! Nothing quite captures your attention in a room like an imposing fireplace... PLANNING The study, living room or the bed room can all be good options to plan a fireplace in. While planning a fireplace, first identify the purpose of the set-up. Is it just another add on to your dcor? Or do you really plan on using it? If you intend using it, plan enough seating arrangement in front of the fireplace. If you are not opting for artificial logs (and fire), fire tending tools such as shovels, pokers, tongs should be within reach. And never sacrifice performance for lower cost, warns Bubble. Usually, a custom made fireplace allows an unusual amount of flexibility and creativity in terms of design and materials. If the room is more casual and traditional, it could be interesting to have a decorative mantle in stone. Dont forget the accessories they should blend with the design. Luxurious materials like bronze and leather can be good options, adds Alice.
Cadogan Square -Casa Forma

MASONRY FIREPLACE
It may be simple or elaborate as it sets the mood for the entire room. A typical traditional masonry fireplace is wall mounted and made of bricks, stones, cement or tiles. The fireplace grate helps to hold the wood off the ground and uses wood as fuel with the intent to produce flames and warmth. Not an eco-friendly option, a chimney is a must to let out the smoke. Usually the fireplace is surrounded by an exterior mantle made of wood, metal, marble, stone, bricks... You need to be well equipped with tools to clean up the ashes

othing warms the senses more than the scent and sound of wood crackling in a fireplace, while you are all huddled in your woollies with the wild wind raging on outside. From the romantic to the practical, a fireplace continues to retain its unique character and is one of those corners of the house which will see maximum activity around it specially as the chill sets in! On a frosty, foggy winter evening, nothing warms the heart more that a warmly lit fireplace with dancing flames, real or artificial, feels Bubble Batra, M.D. One & Only Legendary Furniture. Though the traditional fireplace will never lose its charm, there is no dearth of more heat efficient and environment friendly ones too, these days, she adds. According to Alice Cofanelli, senior interior designer at Casa Forma, Since centuries, fireplaces have warmed our homes, from monumental castles to simple houses. Today, whether functional or purely for aesthetics, a fireplace

be careful about the decorative elements above and around it. Ones with protruding chimney walls can be an interesting space to create a visual impact. You can use the chimney wall by symmetrically placing a collection of paintings; two bespoke pieces of joineries, consoles with dramatic wall lightings above them or a large mirror on the wall above the fireplace to define the space. Alternatively, you can also dress up the entire wall for good effect with an intriguing accent colour or by using an adventurous wallpaper, she explains. PIECE OF ART When not in use, your fireplace can still be an interesting dcor element. Agrees Bubble, Even in the warmer months, the fireplace can be turned into a beautiful accent by using your creativity. Family photographs, personal collections, artefacts and crystal can be displayed on the mantelpiece. Flower arrangements on the sides look magnificent! Planters with exotic indoor plants can add glamour... To retain the character of the fireplace without actually using it, artificial logs can be placed in the fireplace. Even fireplace tools available in attractive designs can be strategically placed in or near the hearth when not in use. Its almost as hard but just as important to decorate the mantel, hearth and chimney wall above it, in a way that achieves balance and harmony. There are so many different types and styles of fireplaces that finding the right style for the home might be a bit of a challenge, feels Alice. According to her, most fireplaces are the focal point of the room and one must

ARTIFICIAL ELECTRIC FIRE

These can either be fitted edge to edge in the fireplace or can be loosely placed as no fuel is required. All one needs is an electric connection. The amount of heat and flames required can be regulated. Also, it may or may not come with a blower. There is also an electric fire unit which does not produce any heat but the logs glow and shimmer like the real fire. Such a fire place has the advantage that it can even be built and lit in places where there is no need for the real fireplace. It can be used in any season just to add to the aesthetics of the place

FIRE CONTAINERS
This unit comes in a box that can be easily pre-fitted into a customised fireplace. Here, real fire is produced by using a special oil that is smokeless, thus ecofriendly. Another advantage is that the fire can be put off at will by putting on the lid provided with the unit, thus cutting off the oxygen required for fire to burn

osting an elegant soiree can be a daunting task, especially when catering to distinguished and disparate tastes. We put together a party planners guide that will turn a fun get-together to something epic and legendary!

Turn the seating area into a warmer space with plenty of cushions and cosy throws. Designate a separate teapoy for coffee and finger food. We recommend plenty of fresh flowers, appropriate mood lighting and plenty of coasters!

DCOR Ensure that every room in the house is well maintained as you never know where your guests might wander off to! The main areas that you need to focus on are the Living room, the Powder rooms, the Dining area, the Outdoor entertainment area and the Guest room. THE LIVING ROOM Make sure there is sufficient seating for all your guests. Keep extra floor cushions at hand. Dedicate a specific area in the closet or in

THE POWDER ROOMS First up: They have to be clean and freshly fragrant, no matter what. Ensure that youve opened a fresh batch of moisturisers, soaps and lotions for your guests. See to it that the rooms are well lit and have a stock of extra toiletries. The mirrors and fixtures should be wiped clean. A handful of fresh flowers are a pleasant add on.

THE DINING AREA Bring out your finest dishware, flatware, glassware, linen and cutlery. Remember to set the table before the guests arrive. In case you dont have a dining area or one that is large enough to accommodate all your guests comfortably, opt for a buffet style dinner. If space permits, allocate a separate dining area for kids. Put some thought into creating an elegant centrepiece that will get your guests talking. THE OUTDOOR ENTERTAINMENT AREA Keep the weather into consideration

Accentuate with plenty of lighting and garden ornaments. Set up sufficient pool or garden side seating areas. We recommend having small clusters of conversation spaces. INVITES The first set of invites should be sent at least 2.5 weeks prior to the day of the party. A reminder should be sent a week before the big day. While deciding your guest list, invite a reasonable number of people keeping in mind your budget and space. Luxurious black tie or stunning red carpet? Decide on a party

theme and choose invites that reflect the same. Insist that your guests RSVP so you know how many to expect. You have the option of sending your invites via the traditional snail mail or the latest fad : e-invites. FOOD AND DRINKS Decide the number of courses you want to serve. Keep your budget in mind while doing so.

Stick to a single food theme for all your courses. If serving Mediterranean cuisine, do not mix it with Indian or Chinese. Consider hiring a well reviewed caterer with serving staff. Keep in mind the preferences of your vegetarian and vegan guests. If serving something exotic like oysters, also make note of their allergies. If you are ordering food or getting it catered, make sure the food reaches the venue an hour before your guests arrive. Keep the bar well stocked. It is always nice to have a mix of cocktails, mocktails and hard liquor. It is fashionable to serve coffee after dinner. Consider hiring a bartender for convenience.

MUSIC Live music? Or do you prefer hooking up a personalised playlist from your Ipod to quality speakers? Western instrumental music is a safe option for most age groups. It is advisable to steer clear of heavy metal rock music. For a younger 20-something guest opt for peppy pop numbers. Perhaps some Katy Perry or Jack Johnson. For 30 or 40 something guests, classics will get them swaying! For live music, hire a soft rock or jazz band for a groovy feel.

GIFTS It is polite to see your guests off with a take-away present. Aromatic candles are perfect for the women. Home-made cupcakes work best for families that include kids. Small vials of fragrances are charming tokens. Exotic coffee beans will always make your guests remember you and your party with a smile.

Potted saplings for the nature-friendly ones! Sets of funky shot glasses so that the party can continue...in mind while doing so.

ETIQUETTE Etiquette dictates that post sending the first set of invites, a follow up call is a must. Cassandra Fernandes, a seasoned party host, says if your guests have had a little too much to drink, a good host offers to call a cab/a drive back or opens their guest room.

She also insists that if an argument at the party begins to turn hostile, it is the hosts prerogative to tactfully diffuse the situation. Pria Warrick, an image builder and etiquette expert, says that the host and hostess should underdress for their own party. She also reminds hosts to take special care of the elderly at the party. Most importantly, she says, the hosts should network with their guests and enjoy themselves, and not just concentrate on service.

If neutral and nude colours are your thing, maybe its about time you step out of your comfort zone and explore hues that you wouldnt be caught dead in otherwise. KITCHEN EXPERIMENTS Ok, now that you have mastered the art of making the perfect butter chicken, how about trying your hand at something different? Make a conscious effort to cook newer, wackier dishes. This way you learn something new and your forever-hungry family will appreciate the extra effort. Not to mention that you may just score more than the salad-freak-with-a-21inchwaistline next door... SAFETY TALKS We couldnt stress more on the simple and most obvious fact our safety is in our hands! The human race, in general, is prone to clumsiness and as the voice of reason at home, you ought to spearhead the safety campaign. Carefully scrutinise your home. Do you turn of the gas cylinder every night? Sometimes, a thing as innocent looking as a glass teapoy can be dangerous, especially if you have lil children around. This doesnt mean you turn into crazyzilla and baby-proof the world. But make sure you and your loved ones are smart about safety!

TREAT YOURSELF Turn your house into a home this year. Your home ought to be more than just a functional roof over your head, right? We recommend turning it into your very own spa slash unwind centre. For instance, turn your bathroom into a pretty powder room.

GARDEN ART Gardening is said to work wonders to calm the mind and soul. With the hectic city life and an ever-demanding job of being a full-time mommy, you need some me time. What better than spending it with gentle creatures of God that dont scream, cry or talk back! A green landscape, however small, soothes the eye while purifying the air. So start gardening this year. If you have a greenthumb already, vow to nurture it with vehemence.

FAMILY FIRST A family that cleans together, stays together! As cheesy as it might sound, use this line when you are convincing your family to spend more time with each other as a unit. Small activities like playing board games every Wednesday night, once a fortnight cook-alongs or even cleaning up the house once a week will help bond better. On a side note, it will also help reduce your workload occasionally and give you some time to unwind. But thats just a side note...

ERASE YOUR CARBON FOOTPRINT And shrink your bills while youre at it... Like they taught us in school, small and rather simple actions matter. GREETING CARD ORNAMENT

DIY and images by Staci Ann Lowry

YOU NEED: Old jar lids, Old Christmas cards, Acrylic paint, Glitter, Ribbon, Scissors, Nail and hammer, Beads and embellishments

1. Use one of the lids to trace out the part of the card you want for your ornament. Center around something that is interesting and eye catching. Cut that out. 2. Next, make a hole in the rim of the lid which will allow the ornament to hang easily later. Place a nail on the point where you want the hole and give it a couple of whacks with a hammer. That should do the trick! 3. Using acrylic paints that match the colour of the card, paint the the back of the lid entirely. 4.Glue your card cutout inside the circle of the lid. 5. Get creative with your ornament by touching up the edges with white paint, and sprinkling white glitter on it for a snowy look. 6.Hang the ornament through a knotted piece of ribbon or experiment with beads and other embellishments. 7. You can also add trims on the inside of the lid and make a second hole at the bottom for a beaded dangle.

reen, fresh, warm and welcoming. Sapna Sondhi Dutts Gurgaon residence is a far cry from what one expects in the middle of a concrete jungle. As buildings soar sky-high in the vicinity, this home greets you with potted greens lined up at different levels on either sides of a path that leads to two separate entrances. One goes straight to the living room on the upper ground level, and the other heads to Sapnas yoga studio in the basement. For Sapna and her husband, the idea was to create a home rooted to the ground literally and one built with natural materials. A few renovations and modifications later, along with their personal touches, they had their perfect dream home... An ideal space for their family and friends,

and one that has ample room for everyone! With a lobby, living area, three bedrooms, dining space, kitchen, a yoga studio and a gym, it is spacious, to say the least. The living room is dotted with cosy little sitting areas, divided by glass partitions. On the left is Sapnas sons bedroom, close to which is a private sit out area facing the front yard.

The house is well planned out and exhibits an interesting play of colours. We chose warm beige and light browns for our living area to create a pleasant atmosphere. Warm tones are evident everywhere, right from the walls to the carpets. From family pictures, artefacts, paintings to a piano or a bookcase, we have created our personal space with objects and decorations that reflect each family members personality, Sapna shares. Varying hues and wood finishes in the form of doors, accessories, furniture and shelving dominate the dining area, facing the almost open kitchen. The design ensures an easy flow between spaces and enjoys a liberal flow of natural light and ventilation. From our early morning chats to a well-laid dinner for our guests, warmth is reflected everywhere. The dining area also enjoys enough natural light with tall glass window overlooking a green patch, adds Sapna. The childrens bedrooms are the most colourful, as both of them Shiv and Brea were given a free hand to design their space. The result? Bright and zany colours and lighting accessories! Breas room is simple, with an interesting oceanic shade of blue on the walls. Her room opens to a balcony facing the backyard and a flight of stairs leading down to an unusual yet spacious dog house.

he concrete jungle slowly begins to fade, a building at a time as we glide away on a speedy expressway. On the outskirts, Bengalurus reputation of being a beautiful green city immersed in a cool, romantic weather continues to remain intact. An hour and a half from the airport, we turn into a narrow lane that promised big plans Wonderla Resort and Amusement Park. The name pretty much says it all, a resort with a fun-filled amusement park in its backyard a first of its kind and the perfect setup for a roller-coaster weekend!

As we entered the spacious reception area where the happy cheer from the park is mildly audible and heavily infectious, our eyes went straight to the most colourful wall, where a 3-dimensional artwork of Chikku (Wonderlas mascot) sat pretty in an airplane having the time of his life a subtle message to onlookers, perhaps. The contemporary dcor of the resort is often sprinkled with fun elements on focus walls that are bound to stop you in your tracks. A major chunk of the 84 rooms face the amusement park a view that dazzles, especially at night. Perched by the window in our fifth floor room, sipping on herbal tea, we watched the prettily lit 13-story Sky Wheel and the fairy-tale castle roof tops surrounded by lush greenery.
118 The Ideal Home and Garden December 2012

It didnt take us long to realise the overall theme of the resort is modern contemporary well-intertwined with recurring use of nature inspired motifs. Their restaurant Woods is a forest themed multi-cuisine joint that serves up scrumptious Indian, Chinese, Thai and Continental dishes, sure to woo your taste buds! We liked the clever use of animal prints and treeshaped structures that turned this area into a fancy theme restaurant. To enjoy a drink or two, go next door to Red Ice Bar thats boasts of a Happy Hour!

he meandering lanes of New Delhis Hauz Khas Village do lead to the ultimate pot of gold, eventually. After parking your vehicle quite a distance away and trudging down the

erratic streets, when you finally do reach Amour, the rooftop resto-lounge, the earthy tones and chic dcor extend a warm welcome. Designed and owned by Randeep Bajaj, the yearold Amour stretches to an approximate length of 10,000 sq.ft.

Drawing strongly from Mediterranean dcor, with an amazing roof top setting amidst warm textures and accents, the lounge transports you to a different world right away. It took us almost a year to complete the restaurant. Once we finalised the cuisine, we decided on a rustic and

earthy Mediterranean tone for dcor. The Al fresco is more relaxed and in line with a beach feel again typical of any Mediterranean restaurant. The indoor area is more subtle and formal, as one expects from a fine dining Italian or French restaurant, explains Randeep.

December 2012 The Ideal Home and Garden 125

RESTAURANT REVIEW

Keeping in mind the rustic feel, the walls throughout the restaurant have a rough texture. We have used earthy tones for flooring, handmade tiles for the outdoors and Spanish tiles for indoors with rough broken edges to give a more worn out look. We have also created a contrast with earthy tones and shades of blue on the walls, as well as floor tiles, he adds. Soft tones of light envelope Amour as the lighting is very

subtle throughout and the outdoor area largely depends on indirect lighting with an emphasis on the candlelight and diffused lighting. Chandeliers and wall lights bedeck the interiors, lending a Classical and European feel. In the Al Fresco area, the wood has been given a worn out look using white on natural rough wood. We have given shades of white in the outdoor finish... But weve also been careful not to overdo it! says Randeep.

126 The Ideal Home and Garden December 2012

RESTAURANT REVIEW

OLD YET NEW

A rustic atmosphere runs throughout the restaurant complete with earthy tones, edgy walls and soft tones of light. The seating exudes comfort and class.

At Amour, the inside seating comprises formal dining tables in addition to couch seating all comfortable and inviting. And dont miss out on the huge boat-shaped seating and grill... Eating out was never so innovatively sexy! Be creative and follow your instincts. Your home should reflect your personality and taste. Keep it simple. It works!

RESTAURANT REVIEW

CLASSY DINING
The Mediterranean decor, with its roof top setting, is subtle yet formal, exactly what one would expect from a fine dining Italian or French restaurant.

RESTAURANT REVIEW

Even your favourite collection of mugs, when allocated to a prominent place, can create an intimate environment. You can create a wow effect while

sticking to a theme. Opt for a gentle time-worn look with elements like rough wood, old textiles, antiques, artefacts or anything that can make a statement.

inters almost here bringing along with it the warmth of cosy throws and hot cocoa, the long lasting holiday cheer and numerous parties to host as well as attend. While you may be busy rounding up decorations and accessories, what better way to enjoy the season than to bring the celebration outside! From a private cosy night under the starry sky to a full blown bring-yourself-plus-theneighbours variety of bash, here are a few tips to match your outdoors to the mood you are in... MORE THAN TWO A lovely weather, strings of conversation and a hearty meal make for the perfect dinner bash. Go for elegance Hosting an elaborate party can be a daunting task, but you can dial it up a notch with lighting that reflects the mood. Opt for illumination that enhances the mood yet spells elegance. Light up the table with rich votives and overhead outdoor lights. Outdoor oasis Overhead fixtures shield the setting and make for a personal oasis. Mix citronella candles with other colourful tea lights to keep away pests, and offer diners light cotton shawls to ward off a chill in the evening. Set out the silverware Bring out your fine china and mix it up with everyday cutlery. A balance of formal and informal should be the setting for a wintry night. Natural colours Plants are the perfect way to enliven a space and soften a deck's edges. Bring colour to the setting with fragrant flowers that make for an interesting centre piece on the table.

AN INTIMATE AFFAIR Holidays make for the perfect opportunity to enjoy a little tte-tte with that special someone. Light up the mood For a snug and warm night, head straight for the lights. Go vintage with lanterns and small fixtures and set up dinner just before sun down. Small things Personal touches a candle, a simple cotton table cloth, a warm atmosphere make the night more inviting and memorable.

By nature's side Simple yet refined should be the philosophy of the outdoor fte. Find a spot that overlooks lush nature if you manage to and rest assured it will make up for any thing that you couldn't pull off in time! Alfresco dining An outdoor dining area needn't be right outside your back door. With the proper building materials and durable furnishings, you can enjoy an alfresco meal in any pleasant nook of your yard.

Be festive Dial up the celebrations by displaying holiday accents in and around the yard. Colourful and intricate wreaths add definition to the entryway and can become an interesting conversation starter. Simple holiday accents like buntings and ornaments add personal touches to the soiree. Light it up Go for festive lighting with colours that bring out the glow of your outdoor area. Reds, greens and yellows

are perfect to liven up the mood. Add to the ambiance with string lanterns. Hang them in trees, from fences or garden trellises, and around the perimeter of gazebo roofs. Neutral string lanterns won't clash with other outdoor party decorations, so you can keep them up all season. At the centre An outdoor table with a white tablecloth is complete with a centre piece bathed in colours of the season namely red and green. Pop a votive or a candle along to lend the finishing touch!

CELEBRATING THE CHEER Throw a party, have a few people over, or just enjoy time with your own family... Holidays are meant to be enjoyed like this!
