About Us

Western care is a voluntary organisation that provides services to children and adults with intellectual disabilities and autism in Co. Mayo. It was established in 1966 by parents and friends of people with learning disability so that services could be provided to people in their own communities. The organisation receives most of its funding from the government to provide its services. Volunteers remain very involved in the organisation through board membership, fundraising and active involvement in day to day services. There is a network of local volunteer branches throughout Co. Mayo that still provide active support to this day. The organisation believes that people should be empowered to live full and satisfied lives as equal citizens. The types of help that is provided include: Therapy and educational supports Respite breaks for individuals and families Support to help people with their living arrangements Support to help people learn skills Support to encourage people to become fully involved with their community

In 2012 the organisation provides services to 930 children and adults with learning disabilities in Co. Mayo and employs 520 staff members. Over 200 volunteers also provide direct help to people using the services. These services are provided at over 60 different community locations.
