IB Diploma Programme Unit Planner

Subject: Physics SL

Start: 18 Sept'12 End: 9 Nov'12

Unit title: Mechanics (Kinematics)

Grade Level: 11 Teacher: JTungka

Essential Questions:
Based on 'Understanding by Design' or other ideas.

Learning Objectives:
Overview of skills, attitudes, concepts, knowledge
Demonstrate an understanding of: a. displacement, distance, velocity, speed and acceleration b. the term instantaneous and average c. the effect of air resistance d. free fall motion e. relative motion Apply and use: a. SUVAT formulae b. motion graphs (gradient and area under a graph) c. vectors in relative motion

We start the physics course with mechanics which deals with questions like where something is, how fast and in what direction it moves, how its motion changes, what causes it, and some consequences of the answers to these questions. How change in direction affects motion? What does the motion graphs tell you? What is the difference betwen instantaneous speed and average speed? How to select the suitable motion formula to solve kinematics problem?

Duration / Timing
Weeks Periods (double) Period (single) Homework Number of tasks Approx. hours 3 17 1 2

Assumed prior knowledge and skills:

knowledge of speed, distance & velocity, displacement the difference between vector & scalar SUVAT formulae for uniform accelerated motion

Assessment Overview
Content / Knowledge
Understanding of key concepts & knowledge

Skills / Internal Assessment

Testing skills / Preparation for IA

Assessed task Students need to understand the concept of distance, displacement, speed, velocity, acceleration and relative motion. Summative Assessments
'Assessment of learning' grades for PG and reporting Gives

Criteria

Students need to understand how to read and use D, DCP & CE the motion graphs.

Formative Assessments
'Assessment for learning' Supports learning and reflection Formative assessments is an opportunity for students to really challenged themselves by doing challenging questions. This a good tools to prepare them for the IB exam.

Summative assessments are taken from kinematics, Forces, Works and circular motion. The aim is to check students understanding of the basic concepts of this unit of Mechanics.

Making Connections
How can this unit support other subject areas? How can this unit be supported by other subject areas?
This unit can support Math in sub topic of travel-graphs and also introduction Math can also support in terms of strengthening students' understanding of Calculus-integration. about graphing functions.

Links with ToK (possible links - can it be communicated to ToK teachers?)

The development of the laws of motion raises interesting issues relating to correlation and cause and scientific theories

Links with current national / global affairs

Car safety issue

Learning Experiences
Theoretical:
Interpreting/extracting information of distance/displacement-time graph, speed/velocity-time graph and acceleration-time graph.

Practical / Applied:
Ticker tape timer and Free fall motion

Resources Required
Texts, Worksheets (where can they be found?)
IB Physics question bank, IB CD-past exam papers and Giancoli text book

Practical Resources
IB-portfolio by Gregg Kerr and IB teacher support materials

Assessment Instructions or Rubrics

Core Considerations
Learner Profile (How will some LP's be addressed in this unit?) Think broader than 'knowledgable' and 'communicatiors' for the obvious subject areas. Students are thinker and risk taker inapplying kinematics formelae. This happens as they are facing different motion scenarios and trying to give the best interpretation and using the most suitable formula. Use of ICT, Infromation Literacy & Academic Honesty International Mindedness (Where do opportunities arise to explore this dimension?)

Car safety - whether safer car or safer driver that can reduce fatality rate in several countries. Aims of the Subject (Which aims, found in the subject guide, will be addressed? How?)

Students will be using graphing softwares, datalogging for their IAs. Also, students wil be using plagiarism.com to check the autenticity of their works.

This topic emphasizing the use of spreadsheets, data logging and computer simulations in lab work and teaching.

Ongoing Reflection and Evaluation

Aspect Teaching / Learning

Success or positive experiences

Students understand the concept of terminal velocity, able, distinguishing scalar & vector, able to contruct kinematics graphs. Students have been equipped with the knowledge of kinematics.

Improvements to be made
Shows more simulations, need to pepare students prior to lab day and not letting students to slow down the class Need to assess relative motion more and need to consider the timing for the test.
