GRADE 9 INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC

Grade 9, Open: AMI1OI (AMI1ON)

COURSE AIMS AND OBJECTIVES:

1) To develop abilities to express yourself through music. This includes gaining the fundamental concepts related to music notation and reading music. 2) To become more sensitive to music you hear, perform and create. This includes working with other class members in spirit of co-operation.
3)

To develop the ability to apply your own skills and knowledge while listening to music of various styles thereby increasing your capacity to enjoy and appreciate music.

EVALUATION

Creating and Performing (40%): A variety of musical genres will be performed, and recorded. Individual solos and small ensembles are also expected. We will also explore creativity through improvisation activities and song writing while utilizing technology. Reflecting, Responding, and Analyzing (15%): Each week will feature listening to a piece of music representing a variety of eras, genres, and cultures that we will listen to, discuss and enjoy. This activity will further enhance your musical vocabulary and appreciation. We will study the importance of music in life by covering historical, cultural, and societal aspects through listening and group discussion. You will be expected to complete a daily listening log that will be marked along with your notebooks at the end of each term. Foundations (15%): Each class will be filled with a variety of fun exercises and warm-ups that concentrate on building strong technique and beautiful intonation and tone. Also, musical notation and theory knowledge will be developed.
SUMMATIVE 30%

At the end of the semester, each student is responsible for creating and presenting their Personal Music Portfolio. It will be worth 10 of 30 summative marks. The remaining 20 will come from a collection of performance tests at the end of the year. Specific details will come at a later date.

PRACTISING

Practising is integral to the developing musician. Students in Grade 9 should practice at least twice a week (min. 30 minutes) to maximize their potential. Practice logs must be updated weekly and will be collected near the end of each term. Instruments are signed out at the end of the day and returned the next day before homeroom.
EXTRACURRICULAR GROUPS (BUILD UP YOUR STUDENT ACTIVITY POINTS!)

Extracurricular involvement will improve your sense of responsibility, teamwork, leadership, and overall school spirit. If you want a summer job, indicating extracurricular involvement on your resume will make you a much stronger candidate over those that dont. INSTRUMENTS, MOUTHPIECES, AND MUSIC

An instrument, mouthpiece, and music folder will be assigned to each student. Care of the instrument, mouthpiece and music folder is expected. Students are responsible for all materials assigned to them. Any damage or loss that occurs through neglect or carelessness, are the responsibility of the student. There is an opportunity for students to purchase their own mouthpiece at school discounted prices if they desire. Please see your teacher after class to place an order.
PERCUSSIONISTS

Percussionists will be assigned a stick bag that contains a pair of drum sticks, yarn mallets, rubber mallets, and timpani mallets. The bag and sticks must be returned in good condition at the end of the semester.
INNOVATE

Those of you who are in the FHCI Innovate Program will be expected to take on leadership roles in the class such as leading warm ups and/or conducting pieces (also consider joining music council) To become more tech savvy, you are encouraged to explore our industry standard recording work station and sound board.

If you are not in the Innovate Program, you are invited to participate in the same manner if you choose. This is not meant to be an exclusive program.
