[An Article for a Class News Bulletin] The Disappearing Act Not to worry, I said to myself. Bart must be in the house somewhere. Why was I looking for Bart.? My four-year-old little brother is more than a handful and one day, of all days, Mum had to attend one of her numerous committee meetings that she had to cajole me to keep an eye on Bart as it was the baby-sitters day off. I reluctantly agreed. I left Bart in the play-room while I went upstairs to answer natures call. It was not five minutes later that I came down to find him missing. I called out his name frantically but there was not the slightest whimper. I looked all over the house ran up and down the stairs. If there was the hundred metre dash, I would have emerged the certain winner. No, I didnt even see his shadow. The main door was slightly ajar Aha! He must have crawled out. I went out the door, peering behind every bush. I even looked in the dustbin, holding my nose at the stench that wafted into my face. Prince, the overweight mongrel, was slouching in his kennel, lying half out of it. He opened his eyes lazily, yawned when I called out to him. Have you seen Bart? He did not even deign to give me an answer, what more look at me. I stood in the middle of the garden, scratching my head. I think I shall ask the maid next door. She shook her head emphatically when I hollered at her and she did not even bother to ask me why. She merely turned her back on me. I walked down the street. This time I was really in quite a panic. I walked to the park. There was a dry note in my throat as a picture of my Bart lying face down in the pond flashed across my vision. My heartbeat quickened when I saw a crowd near the ponds edge. I ran and pushed my way inside to look at the centre of attraction it was just a wet kitten. I was at my wits end. I had no choice but to go to the police station and report a missing child. Initially, the sergeant-on-duty was suspicious of my motives but seeing I was genuinely worried, he told the constable to accompany me home to help me. They may think nothing of arresting me, especially with siblings killing off their siblings as reported in the newspapers. We reached the gate of the house. By now, the day help had come in and the main door was wide open. Then as I looked around the garden, I saw the tiny tot coming out of the dog-kennel, sleepily pushing aside the gigantic mongrel and rubbing his eyes. I swooped on him like a mother eagle and caught hold of him, smothering him with kisses. Boy, what a relief! The policeman, Constable Yap smiled at my joy, patted me on the shoulder and walked off with this parting rejoinder, Keep an eye on that little boy. Dont ever let him out of your sight.

I called out my thanks. The both of us went into the house, Bart to take his belated morning bath and I? To nurse my throbbing heart.
