6th Grade Music Class Expected Outcomes: The learner will 1. Define and play a C-pentatonic scale. 2. Define and play the I, IV, and V chord in C-major. 3. Perform the Chinese Hao Peng You song. Teaching/Learning Strategy for each expected outcome. 1. The class will act as a collaborative group as every student will be responsible for one note of C-pentatonic scale. 2. Again, as a collaborative group, the class will perform. This builds esteem and equity among classmates. 3. Students will learn a song in Mandarin and then play it together on instruments. In addition to esteem and equity, studying another language and culture is likely to foster empathy among the students. Resources Needed for Each Expected Outcome 1. Students will need paper and pencil to copy a definition of scale and then draw a few example scales. They will be playing their scales on pitched plastic tubes called Boomwhakers. These only cost about $20 per octave. Though not necessary, access to youtube would be helpful to show students some actual Chinese instrumentalists performing songs that make use of the pentatonic scale. 2. Students will again need basic classroom supplies to take a few notes and create some musical chords on paper. Teacher access to a piano for demonstrations is another good but not necessary resource. 3. Have some prepared worksheets (see below) that allow students the opportunity to learn some basic Mandarin Chinese. The chords for the Hao Peng You song should also be written out in advance using software such as Finale if possible and projected on the board. Step by step procedures for teaching the lesson. Step 1- Introduce students to the C-major scale by defining it and creating it on the board. Then play the C-major scale on Boomwhakers. Explain that in Asia, one more common scale is the pentatonic scale. Play the pentatonic scale for them and then show them examples of Chinese musicians performing songs based on the pentatonic scale. Define and draw the pentatonic scale. Play the pentatonic scale on boomwhakers as a class.

Step 2- Show the students how to create a chord on every note of the C-major scale on the board and explain that chords create harmony. Have the students draw the three most common chords: I, IV, and V (C, F, G). Practice playing these chords on Boomwhakers with some wellknown American folk or pop songs. Step 3- Practice saying the Mandarin numbers and phrases from the prepared worksheets. Teach the students the melody to the Hao Peng You song. Sing it through several times as a class while accompanying them on piano. Then have the students practice the chordal accompaniment on Boomwhakers. Invite another class to hear their performance of the Hao Peng You song. If possible, have one student volunteer sing the melody while the rest of the class accompanies them. Performance Assessments: 1. Performing/playing a C-major and C-pentatonic scale. 2. Performing/playing the I,IV, and V chord in C-major. 3. Saying basic greetings and numbers in Mandarin Chinese. 4. Singing the melody to Hao Peng You. 5. Performing/Playing the accompaniment to Hao Peng You. Written Assessment: Students will be asked to reflect on their performance by discussing two starts and a wish about their performance.
