CHAPTER
BASIC CONCEPT OF QUALITY

Most recently, in modern industries the goal is to manufacturer are striving for quality and the cost reduction to meet customer satisfaction, market demand and increasing productivity in short time. The quality improvement in product manufacturing has undergone change from its initial emphasis on quality through inspection, to the present day emphasis on quality through the development of robust processes capable of performing consistently in developing products that meet and exceed user needs and expectations. 1.1 Definition of Quality There are many definitions of quality. However, the widely accepted definitions are fitness for use, conformance to requirements, and the totality of characteristics of an entity that bear on its ability to satisfy stated and implied need. For example, Garvin (1988) suggested five coexisting definitions that emerge from certain point of views. They are: a) b) c) d) e) 1.2 Transcendent (excellence), Product- based (amount of desirable attribute), User-based (fitness for use), Manufacturing- based (conformance to specification) and Value- based (satisfaction relative to price).

Fitness for use. {Dr. Juran (1964)} The leading promoter of the zero effects concept and author of quality is free (1979) defines quality as Conformance to requirements. {Phillips Crosby} Quality should be aimed at needs of customer, present and future. {Dr. Deming}
