Aboriginal Place Names in Canada

Place names on the map of Canada reflect the diverse history and heritage of our nation. Many of the earliest place names draw on Aboriginal sources. Names describe natural features of the land, significant historical events or areas of strong spiritual connection. Sample of Aboriginal Names The name of Canada itself is Kanata meaning settlement or village in the language of the Huron. Many Canadian provinces, cities and towns have names that come from Aboriginal sources. For example the city of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan comes from an edible red berry native to the area, which the Cree call mis-sask-guah-too-min.

Mapping Assignment You will complete a map of Canada, providing the location and names of twenty communities whose name comes from an aboriginal language. You are limited to three from each of the provinces or territories. You must locate and place a number from one to twenty for each community on the map. You must then, on a separate piece of paper provide the name of the community and a meaning for each. Make sure you include the cultural origin of the name. Make sure you provide a title for your map. You must also name all the current provinces and territories on the map in Upper Case.

Marking Assignment will be marked out of a possible 25 marks.
