Week 1

Teaching activity Explain the outcome of the topic. Show the class photographs of past and present playground equipment. Trip to a local playground. Once, back in the classroom discuss favourite equipment, materials used and how theyve been together shared writing on the board of points said. Look at a range of materials; plastic, bubble wrap, metal etc to test what would be best. Make 3D shapes using basic net designs. Evaluate their 3D shapes and how to make it better when they make their real one. Decide on what materials they might use for their own model. Look at photographs from trip to playground. Brainstorm/class discussion about ideas for their model. Look at ways on how they would join materials together in order to make their model. First half of the lesson, design their playground in groups of four, in

Aims Consider different materials to make equipment. Pupils to come up with vague ideas for their own design. To know the reasons for what makes a good piece of playground equipment.

Outcomes To be able to recognise simple features of the playground equipment. Investigate how materials have been used to make the play equipment and have a basic idea of how the items have been assembled.

Resources Photographs of past and present playgrounds. Pencils, papers and clipboards.
