Sarah Hirschi 1/22/2013 American Lit. Mrs. Martin The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn Theme/Motif Response 1.

I chose between two of the options that Id noticed had already come up in the book by the time that we were assigned this- superstitions and lies and moral dilemmas. I chose lies and moral dilemmas because I had a hunch that lots of people would choose superstitions, and I was right!(: 2. I used sticky-notes to keep track of this theme/motif. 3. I found 24 different examples of this theme/motif in the book, although Im sure there were more because I ran out of sticky notes and didnt put a sticky note in all of them. 4. Honestly I dont think I really gained any insights while tracking this! 5. It was a thesis that revolved around the idea that Huck lied about having a family so much because he wished that he had a proper family. I didnt really put it into sentence form until I was coming up with my final thesis. 6. To come up with my final thesis, I really just tried to put it into a sentence form that could be backed up easily. 7. See attached. 8. I organized my supports most significantly to least significantly- how well they backed up my thesis and reasons or not. 9. I learned that it can be really cool to try and mainly focus on one theme or motif throughout a book! At the same time though, this is a disadvantage because youre only focusing on one thing; only looking out for one thing, so you dont really take in as much of the rest of the book. An advantage, however, is that you get to become an expert, so to speak, on your theme or motif that you chose to track. 10. Another theme/motif that looks interesting would be the one about Huck growing up throughout the book.

11. If I had to do this assignment again I think Id try to write more on the sticky notes about what I was thinking when I first read the passage. After a while I slacked and began just writing little bullet points, but it would have been nice to see all my thoughts, since I cant remember all of them now. I think a change to this assignment to make it more effective would be to introduce this assignment at the start of the novel, so that youre thinking about it during the whole book, not after 7 or so chapters.
