Standards: My unit on the topic of oviparous eggs will address standards from all four of the major subject

areas with particular emphasis on science and literacy. Common Core Literacy Grade 1: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.1.10 With prompting and support, read informational texts appropriately complex for grade 1. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.1.8 Identify the reasons an author gives to support points in a text. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.1.5 Know and use various text features (e.g., headings, tables of contents, glossaries, electronic menus, icons) to locate key facts or information in a text. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.1.4 Ask and answer questions to help determine or clarify the meaning of words and phrases in a text. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.1.2 Write informative/explanatory texts in which they name a topic, supply some facts about the topic, and provide some sense of closure. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.1.3 Write narratives in which they recount two or more appropriately sequenced events, include some details regarding what happened, use temporal words to signal event order, and provide some sense of closure. PA Science Grade 1 Assessment: 3.1.1.C3 3.1.1.A2 3.1.1.A9: that all scientific investigations involve asking and answering questions and comparing the answer with what is already known Common Core Science (Embedded in Reading) Grade 1: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.1.1 CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.1.6 Distinguish between information provided by pictures or other illustrations and information provided by the words in a text. Teaching Methods: Nonfiction and fiction read alouds (teacher guides group discussion) reading and writing workshop model (minilessons that focus on a particular skill students will practice independently and share with class afterwards) interactive writing CLI Message Time Plus (presenting new info/reviewing what theyve learned from read alouds, vocabulary and strategies used for decoding nonfiction texts

Knowledge of Students and Context: Curriculum Materials: - Chart paper - Pictures of life cycles of the oviparous animal eggs - Oviparous egg sample collection (borrowing from Nancylee) - Nonfiction books (i.e. Animal Eggs) - Fiction books (i.e. Horton Hatches An Egg) - Poems (egg-related) - Word wall words - Message Time Plus messages (related to oviparous animals) - Prior knowledge on polar animals (specifically penguins and polar bears) - Students have done research in groups of 6 and written their own nonfiction texts in writing workshop (6 small pages with illustrated pictures) - Students have been working on writing nonfiction texts in writing workshop since the start of January - Students love doing science experiments and learning about science (they only get 45 minutes of science each week) so having a more science-based unit will be engaging for them - Chick eggs are scheduled to come in the week after my 2-week takeover as well as a visit from a farmer (this was set in place before I decided on my unit) - Life cycles are complex systems and learning about them will help students develop a foundation for sequences and cause and effect

Oviparous Animals and Eggs

Why

How
Educational Philosophy and Beliefs: - Students can become interested in any subject matter as long as the teacher presents it in a way the students can become engaged in easily and the material is easily accessible to them - The teacher needs to make a clear and strong connection to the subject matter in relation to past information and skills they have learned and practiced as well as to their current lives - I have to constantly revise my lesson plan up till when I am teaching it based on the discussion that occurs during the lesson; it is crucial to get a gauge on what they know already and where I can lead them next - Never underestimate students, even the ones that dont progress as quickly as the other students; always encourage them to try and keep presenting opportunities to them - The discussion that erupts is more important than the completed worksheet; of course it is good to have both as the worksheet can be used as a tool of assessment but it is more important that the kids think, not just what they write down

Theories of Teaching and Learning: - Reading and Writing Workshop (Calkins) - The importance of connecting prior and new information (Van De Walle) - Constant reflection is required of those who authentically commit to the people must re-examine themselves constantly (Freire) - Education helps people understand what they know and dont know; this gives them a chance to take responsibility for themselves and remake themselves by what they learn (Freire)
