The Periodic Table on the Internet

www.chem4kids.com
Welcome to Chem4kids! You will search this site to answer questions about the periodic table. 1) What is an Element? An element is basically a building block of matter. It is the simplest substance. Made entirely of one type of atom. Cannot be divided into anything smaller. They are made up of protons and neutrons and electrons but in a simpler form, elements are made up of atoms. 2) On the periodic table, What are the rows called? What do they all have in common? Rows are called periods Each element in a row have the same number of atomic orbitals/shells. 3) What is a shell? A shell is like a coating around the nucleus. An atom holds its electrons in its shells. A shell is sometimes called an orbital or energy level.

4) What are the columns called? What do they all have in common? Columns are called groups. Each column has the same amount of electrons in the outer shell (valence electrons) Each element in a group have the same number of orbitals in an elements outer orbital. 5) What is an atom? An atom is like a REALLY small piece of matter. Atoms make up everything. You cant see them. Basic unit of an element. Made of protons, neutrons, and electrons 6) What is a nucleus? Is like the brain of an element It is the center of an element and all of the electrons orbit it. The nucleus has protons and neutrons in it. Middle if the atom/the center Positively charged (because of protons) The electrons just surround it

7) Define Atomic Number : Is the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom (also number of electrons) 8) Define Atomic Mass: Is the weight in amu (atomic mass unit) of all of the types of atoms (protons, neutrons, and electrons) in an element 9) Choose any 6 elements and find the following information (referring only to the periodic table):
2 Helium He 4.002602 2 protons 2 electrons 2 neutrons 89 Actinium Ac 227 89 protons 89 electrons 138 neutrons 17 Chlorine Cl 35.453 17 protons 17 electrons 18 neutrons 54 Xenon Xe 131.293 54 protons 54 electrons 77 neutrons 53 Iodine I 126.90447 53 protons 53 electrons 74 neutrons 39 Yttrium Y 88.09585 39 protons 39 electrons 50 neutrons
