19, 2013 English Department Search Committee: Im writing in support of Kati Lewis, who has applied for a tenure-track teaching position at Salt Lake Community College (SLCC). I have known Kati for more than two yearssince I hired her to be SLCCs ePortfolio Coordinatorand am very familiar with her work inside and outside the classroom. Part of her load as ePortfolio Coordinator has been to teach for the English and Humanities departments. Theres no use beating around the bush in this recommendation: Kati Lewis is the most effective adjunct faculty I have had the pleasure of knowing in all my time (18 years) at SLCC. She combines a passion for teaching and learning in the abstract with a deep concern for each individual student in her courses. In other words, she is conversant in the language of learning outcomes, course design and effective pedagogy . . . and then manages to effectively design outcomes, course assignments and learning activities that engage her students. Students thrive in Katis courses. I know, because I have been to see her students presentations at the end of each semester. She engages her students with assignments that get them out of their comfort zones and asks them to deal with real-world problems. Kati has been particularly innovative in linking her English courses with Adam Dastrups Geography courses, and having students use Web 2.0 technology to make collaborative presentations. Katis excellence in the classroom pays dividends in her role as ePortfolio Coordinator. Faculty in many disciplines at SLCC already know her to be a fantastic teacher who can help them with signature assignments and reflection activities. She is also an integral part of the leadership team for our Connect to Learning (ePortfolio) grant. I appreciate her organizational skills as well. She is currently planning a major ePortfolio conference to be held at SLCC in April. I take from her performance as ePortfolio Coordinator that when she tells the English department shell do something, you will be able to count on her doing itand doing it exceptionally well. Finally, I will say that Kati Lewis is already a professional colleague of so many people at SLCC. She is demonstrating her collaboration and leadership skills on several committees. Additionally, she has collaborated with several other faculty on national conference presentations. I have no reservations about recommending Kati Lewis to you for this teaching position. The English department would be lucky to have her. Sincerely, David A. Hubert David Hubert , Ph.D. Professor of Political Science and ePortfolio Director
