t is year 1992. Yugoslavia is dead and its

executioners are dividing the spoils. It is
Bosnia and Herzegovina's turn. They arrived to the Drina River basin and Bira. The
untamed specter of past darkness and fear has
returned to our land, threatening us again with
slaughter, pits and concentration camps, with
fire and destruction of everything that is ours,
Serbian: houses, monuments, churches
An evil portent and a black premonition
hang over Bira. Serbs are once again filled with
doubts what next? They will not reconcile
themselves to the fact that everyone has been
accorded a right to a piece of this dismembered
country except for them. Yet, it was their own
ancestors and fathers who shed the most blood
in the two world wars, building their lives into
the foundations of this same country. The old,
resumed injustice offends the Serbian people of
3

Bira, their pride, their repeatedly threatened religious and national sentiment.
As in previous times, wars and uprisings, the
people of Milii, a Bira commune, once again
have to take up arms and defend their homes,
villages and their town. And not only that
Miliis soldiers would stand on many other
frontlines throughout |Republika Srpska, in defense of the Serbian people.
They stood brother next to brother in the
trenches, on the unbreachable front of Serbian
heroism and honor, their eyes firmly on an ideal
worth sacrificing ones life for. They looked upon
their homeland, Republika Srpska, being born
as the most splendid dawn, out of the darkness
and gloom into which they had been thrown.
Miliis best sons gave the gift of blood to
their homeland, some of them even their lives.
They died with the faith that their sacrifice
would not be in vain, certain that they were
building a home in which their successors would
grow up free of worry, fall in love, marry, bear
children. It is heroes of such moral purity and
patriotic inspiration that rest today in the Milii
Memorial Home.
Up on the knoll, from which their entire
town can be seen, the river Jadar murmuring its
soft march nearby, they stand silently in their
eternal ranks of honor, rectitude and courage.

It is as though the faces of the Serbian martyrs,

crowned with the glory of their deeds, are frozen in the moment that death interrupted their
dreams and stole their hopes
And, so, do come and visit their eternal
home, come face to face with their images. In
their eyes, the expressions of their faces, you
shall see the depth of their dream, the strength
and power of their will.
Light a candle, close your eyes and follow
that dream. Abandon yourself to the breeze that
descends from Bira, let it carry you above their
native hamlets, by the lively streams and flowery meadows where they tended their flocks, the
5

wheat fields where they harvested their crops,

to the mines and the rich forests where they
worked. If you make the effort, you might make
it to the ravines of their childhood, sit at their
school desks or attend the village dance where
they first fell in love.
You shall see them handsome, smiling and
happy. They shall rejoice at every encounter with
you, wishing to hear your own lifes story. They
want to rejoice at your every success and delight
in your happiness, to extend through your love
their own prematurely interrupted ones.
Talk to them. Tell them you know that they
are the ones that won the freedom you enjoy today. Allow them to take pride in that.
Do not, under any circumstance, cry, for
your tears will pain them. They still want to love
and you yourself are a part of their love, their
pride, their dream. You are continuing where
they stopped, finishing what they started.
Open your eyes and let them gratefully pass
once more over the brave faces of these people,
cross yourself and say:

ilii is the central commune of

the Bira region, in the eastern
part of Republika Srpska, covering an area of 285 km2. At the time of the 1991
census, its population numbered about 16,000.
Before the last Homeland War, with its developed economy, centered around the Boksit
Company, the Milii commune was the moving
force and locomotive of the entire regions development. That is why it was a thorn in the side
of those bent on destroying Yugoslavia, who initiated the civil war in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
When the first fighting broke out, the Serbian
people of the Milii commune, under the leadership of the Territorial Defense Headquarters,
formed the Mine Company and the detachments of Milii, Vuki Polje, Dubnica,
Derventa, Podgora, Lukavica and Bijelo Polje.
These units controlled and defended the

77

commune boundaries. A battalion from the 210th

Hill Brigade of the Yugoslav People's Army (JNA)
was manned with mobilized soldiers from the
Milii commune. With the establishment of the
First Bira Brigade, the defense of the Serbian
people from the Bira region was rounded out.
Then came the need for the formation of the
Vlasenica-Milii Brigade, out of which the First
Milii Light Infantry Brigade was subsequently created.
The soldiers of the Assault Squadron, who
fought on the entire territory of Bira, stood
out with their courage and activity. A large
contribution to the preservation of the liberated territory and the formation of Republika
Srpska was provided by the artillery, engineering and rear formations of the Drina Corps,
parts of which were stationed and active on the
territory of the Milii commune, as well as by
the Protective Regiment of the General Staff of
the Army of Republika Srpska, and members
of the police unit formed within the Milii police station. Their basic and only task was to, in
an extremely unfavorable position, surrounded
by numerous Muslim armed formations from
Srebrenica, Cerska and epa, protect and defend their families, the Serbian villages and the
town of Milii itself. Selflessly sacrificing all
they could, including their lives, they justified

the peoples hopes and carried out their humane task.

The people of Milii remember their casualties and preserve the memory of their persons
and deeds. As a token of eternal memory, the
Memorial Home devoted to the memory of 266
of our fellow citizens, soldiers and victims of the
war imposed upon the Serbs in 19921995 was
built in the yard of the monastery in Milii.
Photographs of the victims are enclosed in
this book in the same order as in the Memorial
Room.
