Anti-infectives (antibiotics)

Penicillins
broad spectrum antibiotic

Action: disrupts cell wall formation in bacterial cells Used for: for bacterial infections ( EX: strep, pharyngitis, pneumonia, meningitis, syphilis, gonorrhea, catheter inf, skin inf, gram organisms affecting GI tract: salmonella, shigella) Contradictions: Hypersensitivity to penicillins, or cephalosporins Use with Caution in PT with: Renal & hepatic impairment **MAJOR DRUG INTERACTIONS** Aminoglycosides, Probenecid Interventions PT Education Side effects: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea (dont treat w/ OTC med), fever, rash Give 1-2 h before meals or 2-3 h after meals, may make oral contraceptives less effective Super infection S&S: black, furry tongue, thrush, vaginal discharge Penicillinase resistant amoxicillin clavulanate (Augmentin) piperacillin (Pipracil) nafcillin (Unipen)

Cephalosporins
Action: disrupts cell wall formation in bacterial cells Used for: for bacterial infections Contradictions: Cross-sensitivity to penicillins, Hypersensitivity Use with Caution in PT with: Renal imparment, GI bleeding or disease (Past or Present) **MAJOR DRUG INTERACTIONS** Probenecid, NSAIDS, thrombolytics, anticoagulants, antiplatelet drugs Tetracyclines cefazolin sodium (Ancef) doxycycline (Vibramycin) cephalexin (Keflex) tetracycline hydrochloride (Tetracycline) cefaclor (Ceclor) cefoxitin sodium (Mefoxin) ceftriaxone (Rocephin) Aminoglycosides gentamicin sulfate (Garamycin) tobramycin sulfate (Nebcin) neomycin sulfate Anti-fungal amphotericin B (Fungizone) fluconazole (Diflucan) miconazole (Monistat) clotrimazole (Gyne-Lotrimin) nystatin (Mycostatin) Miscellaneous clindamycin(Cleocin) vancomycin (Vancocin)

Anti-parasitic metronidazole (Flagyl)
