PHY 108 (Sec 1 & 2) Assignment 3

Last date of submission: 29th November 2012 (Thursday) You do not need to include the question paper with your answer script.

1) A wire of Nichrome is 1.0m long and 1.0mm2 in cross-sectional area. It carries a current of 4.0A when
a 2.0V potential is applied between the ends. Calculate the conductivity of Nichrome.

2) A block in the shape of a rectangular solid has a cross-sectional area of 3.50 cm2 across its width, a
front-to-rear length of 15.6 cm, and a resistance of 935. The blocks material contains 5.33 x 1022 conduction electrons/m3. A potential difference of 35.8 V is maintained between its front and rear faces. (a) What is the current in the block? (b) If the current density is uniform, what is its magnitude? What are: (c) the drift velocity of the conduction electrons and (d) the magnitude of the electric field in the block?

3) The current in a single-loop circuit with one resistance R is 5.0A. When an additional resistance of
2.0 is inserted in series with R, the current drops to 4.0A. What is R?

4) In Figure 1, the current in resistance 6 is i6 = 1.40A and the resistances are R1 = R2 = R3 = 2.00, R4 =
16.0, R5 = 8.00, and R6 = 4.00. What is the emf of the ideal battery?

5) A 15.0 k resistor and a capacitor are connected in series, and then a 12.0 V potential difference is
suddenly applied across them. The potential difference across the capacitor rises to 5.00 V in 1.40 ms. (a) Calculate the time constant of the circuit. (b) Find the capacitance of the capacitor.

6) In the circuit of Figure 2, E = 1.2kV, C = 6.5F, R1 = R2 = R3 = 0.78M.

With C completely uncharged, switch S is suddenly closed (at t = 0). At t = 0, what are: (a) current i1 in resistor 1, (b) current i2 in resistor 2, and (c) current i3 in resistor 3? At t = infinity (that is, after many time constants), what are (d) i1, (e) i2, and (f) i3? What is the potential difference V2 across resistor 2 at (g) t = 0 and (h) t = infinity?
