Sewing a Patch Pocket

Patch Pockets can come in many different style, shapes and sizes. Here I will demonstrate a basic Patch Pocket.

1.

Fold the top of the pocket down to required length and topstitch with the raw edge underneath.

2. Using an iron press the seam allowances (1.5cm) around the 4 raw edges. Be careful not to stretch when ironing on the Bias (Diagonal of the fabric) as this will cause the pocket to stretch out of shape! And ensure to get all seam allowances even and straight

and pin into position. Always place your pins at a right angle to the stitch line to allow the sewing machine to sew over them, without causing damage

3. Position where you would like to place the pocket

4. Using a large straight stitch ( 4-5) edge stitch along the folded edge of the pocket, ensuring not to pull the fabric as this could distort the pocket
TOP TIP! To allow easy control when stitching around tricky bends: Use the Hand Wheel to control stitching!

5. When stitching around corners, its very important that when you get to the corner, ensure that your needle in down in the fabric to allow you to lift the presser foot and turn the fabric into position for the next line of stitching. This allows you to get a crisp line of stitching around corners.

6. Depending on your design and the fabric, you can will be doing a double row of topstitching. For a professional finish, you should press this area after each row of stitching. 7. To complete the pocket stitching, stitch diagonal lines at opening of the pocket to add strengthening
