Join us for our fourth annual congress: the Knowledge city culture, science, place, in newcastleGateshead. held over three days (13 - 15 may 2009), the congress brings together 300 delegates from a wide variety of disciplines and regions to discuss the relationship between the knowledge city and the art of contemporary placemaking.
We begin on Wednesday by exploring our backdrop. Where better to look at the making of place in the Knowledge Age than NewcastleGateshead - a totemic bridging of distinct communities that links past industry with current innovation, and an ancient pre-English culture with 21st century identity. The area that has spawned the electric lamp, Stephensons engines, and many mining and industrial inventions has much to teach us. Today it boasts leading stem cell, cancer and sub-sea technologies, as well as an identity reborn with culture - expressed in icons such as the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, The Sage Gateshead and The Angel of the North. On Thursday we join leading academics and contributors from the private and public sectors to explore the themes of Culture, Science and Place. How can science and the creative arts add to the richness and liveability of contemporary places? Are there tensions and trade-offs; winners and losers? How does it affect the physicality of place? We round the day off with a dinner at the Discovery Museum, to celebrate the nominees for The Urbanism Awards 2010. The final morning provides an opportunity to participate in the Academys Core Programmes: UniverCities, City X-Rays and KnowyourPlace and concludes with a picnic at The Angel of the North - a fitting finale, not to be missed!
