COURSE DESCRIPTION AND GOALS Italian 100 is the first-semester of a one-year course for students who have never studied Italian. All students who have previously studied Italian are required to take a placement test. Italian 100-200 is a year-long course; you are expected to continue with this course in the spring semester in order to receive full credit. Please note: your grade for semester II will replace the temporary grade you will receive in semester I. This course is structured around listening and speaking activities like role-playing exercises and interactive grammar exercises. Class work will be supplemented by weekly homework assignments on Quia-Workbook. The course will provide you with many opportunities to speak, since the greater part of each hour will be spent working in pairs or in groups. You will read simple texts in Italian and will develop your writing skills initially through short compositions and later through longer essays. When you have completed this course, you will be able to engage in some basic interactions in Italian. You will be able to greet people and introduce people; you will know how to describe yourself, your life, and your likes and dislikes; you will be able to ask questions of and interact with others; you will have begun to learn how to describe events in the past and your plans for the immediate future.
