GENERIC NAME:

CLASSIFICATION: Cholinergic blocking drug Antiparkinson drug

INDICATIONS: Parkinsonism Drug-induced extrapyramidal effects.

SIDE EFFECTS / ADVERSE REACTIONS: Agitation, blurred vision, constipation, dizziness, drowsiness, lightheadedness, dry mouth/nose/throat, nausea, nervousness, GI upset

NURSING RESPONSIBILITY: Tell patient to take drug after meal to avoid gastric irritation. Do not stop drug abruptly, taper dose gradually. Do not use antacids or antidiarrheals for 1-2 hours after taking drug. Avoid overheating; drug reduces perspiration. Consume plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration. Record stools; increase intake of fluids, fruit juices, and fiber to avoid constipation; report urinary difficulty.

biperiden hydrochloride

BRAND NAME: Akineton MECHANISM OF ACTION: Blocks acetylcholines action at cholinergic receptor sites. This action restores the brains normal dopamine and acetylcholine balance, which relaxes muscle movement and decreases rigidity and tremors. Biperiden also may inhibit dopamine reuptake and storage, which prolongs dopamines action.

DOSAGE: Tab: 2mg Inj: 5mg/ml

CONTRINDICATIONS: Achalasia, bladder neck obstruction, hypersensitivity to biperiden, myasthenia gravis, narrow-angle glaucoma, prostatic hypertrophy, pyloric or duodenal obstruction stenosing peptic ulcer, toxic megacolon
