Nurturing STEM: Preparing Young Women to Enter Science, Technology, and Mathematics Careers

8. Abstract: In 100 words or less, briefly state the who, what and why of the project and overview of the results expected. Omit jargon.
The Library of Trinity High School, a Catholic college preparatory high school for young women, seeks a grant totaling $5000 to be divided equally between print books and DVDs in the STEM subjects of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. These acquisitions will nurture an interest among Trinity's diverse, single gender population to pursue careers in STEM. Trinity is making a concerted effort to encourage STEM pursuits, along with a culture of lifelong learning. This grant will support the Mathematics, Technology, and Science departments' curricula, enriching the 2013/14 curriculum expansion of new courses in STEM subjects.

11. Administrative Capacity: a. Describe the agencys capacity to support the project. (e.g., internal controls such as policies for procurement, hiring, inventory management or travel) b. Describe how the key person(s) involved in this project has the experience, training, and/ or education to deliver activities proposed.

a. Books and DVDs that are positively reviewed in professional journals or recommended by faculty will be targeted to expand the science, mathematics, and technology nonfiction collections. All funds provided by the Back to Books grant will be used exclusively for the cost of acquiring the materials requested. Any additional expenses for personnel or processing will be covered by Trinity. All ordering will occur through book jobbers with whom Trinity has established accounts and a good working relationship that allows for quick adjustments if problems with orders occur. Invoices will be paid through an LSTA account established by the business office exclusively for the administration of the grant. All grant funds will be held in a non-interest bearing account until disbursed. During the summer months materials will be cataloged in OCLC WorldCat and made available for sharing through ILLINET interlibrary loan services, as is the rest of the collection. Trinity honors the current ILLINET Interlibrary Loan Code and participates in reciprocal borrowing. River Forest Public Library serves as the drop off and pick up point for all deliveries, and Trinity librarians make daily trips there during the height of research season. b. Trinity Library employs two full-time staff members and one part-time paraprofessional. Library Director Molly Klowden has dedicated 18 years to Trinity. In 1975, she received her MLS from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and has since held positions as an academic librarian and school library media specialist. She is the former president of two professional organizations: Resources and Technical Services Division of Illinois Library Association and High School Library Media Association. Susan Tindall is the other full-time staff member. In 1979, she earned her MFA from the University of Illinois at Chicago. In addition to her role as the assistant librarian, she also serves as Trinity's Director of Instructional Technology.

12. Project Description: a. Describe the overall project. Include details about methods, activities or services to be provided, how they will be implemented, and how items budgeted will be used. b. If appropriate, explain the roles of partnering agencies. The request for funding "Nurturing STEM" arose from an analysis of the Trinity Library collection which showed that STEM resources were under represented and the collection was very out of date. Trinity is re-mapping its entire curriculum to reflect the Common Core. In addition, the Trinity librarians are mapping reading, writing and research activities across the curriculum to the ISAIL standards. During these processes Trinitys librarians have identified a direct need to acquire additional materials in support of STEM course offerings, especially those that will debut in Fall 2013. Additional high quality print and video resources that target STEM careers as well as biographies of women who have succeeded in STEM are also needed to enhance the collection. (Please see section 13 for a full description of why enhancing STEM in a single gender school is important.) The new books and videos will be selected from recommendations from professional library journals and faculty recommendations. Special attention will be paid to selecting materials that actively encourage or portray women participating in STEM. Trinity accepts students from the 50th percentile in reading and up to the 99th. A reading specialist works with students to improve their reading comprehension and fluency. STEM books will be selected in a wide lexile distribution (600-1300) to reach our diverse reading skill levels. This grant will facilitate Trinitys ability to meet the needs of a 21st century education in STEM. It will help nurture a student body composed of two groups underrepresented in the STEM workplace- women and minorities. Biographies of women working in STEM areas, richly illustrated informational books, educational DVDs, and inspirational books will help to spark STEM interest in young women. Faculty will be asked for input in the buying decisions to ensure that they have a personal stake in the active use of the resources. New holdings will be showcased at department meetings, and pathfinders featuring these materials will be available for faculty to distribute to their classes. Students will be introduced to the new resources through a variety of interactions. Promotional efforts to encourage use of the materials will include Back to School Night book talks for parents and students, appealing book displays, and annotated bibliographies. Opportunities to review books are provided in the Trinity online catalog and students will be encouraged to submit their own reviews. All incoming freshmen will be surveyed by the Guidance department to determine their career interests. They will then spend 5 periods (6 hours) with the librarians during the Freshman Seminar Research project researching their prospective careers and being introduced to the new resources. They will be surveyed at the end of the seminar to determine if they have more or less interest in STEM careers after becoming more familiar with them. Seniors who will not have had exposure to four years with the new resources will be surveyed in their homerooms about planned college majors and careers in order to estimate the impact of the new materials. The result of the two surveys will be compared to determine if the promotional efforts as they were used the first year were effective, or if they should be revamped for the following school year.

13. Target Audience and Need: a. Explain the need for this project or a problem the project addresses. b. Identify the specific target audience, libraries or groups who will benefit, participate or use the services provided. Estimate of the number of persons/libraries the project directly seeks to impact. c. If applicable, explain promotion, recruitment and/or outreach strategies to encourage involvement by the target audience.

a. Traditionally, women have been underrepresented in science and engineering careers. According to the National Science Foundation, National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics 2013 report #13-204, "Women, Minorities, and Persons with Disabilities in Science and Engineering," Blacks, Hispanics, and Native Americans earn fewer science and engineering bachelor's degrees relative to their population than do Whites. They constitute 5% of the science and engineering workforce; white women 18%, and Asian women 5%. The NSF records "glacial" progress toward making the US science and engineering student population and workforce reflect the USA's population. Some of the growth can be attributed to a concerted effort to encourage females to take more science and mathematics in high school. Single gender schools are uniquely positioned to nurture future scientists and engineers by offering a wide range of courses taught in ways that are most suited to the learning styles of female students. Illinois requires 3 years each of mathematics and science to graduate from high school. Trinity students have the potential to graduate with 5.5 mathematics credits and 6.25 in science. (64% of this year's graduates will have 4 or more mathematics credits.) This in not uncommon as young women in single gender schools take math and science courses at double the national average. STEM courses must be supported with appropriate resources that Trinity lacks. Of the 6,742 nonfiction books in the collection, only 325 are in Natural Science/Mathematics (average age 1986) and 393 are in Technology (average age 1995). There are no books on manufacturing and only 34 about engineering fields. The collection needs to be weeded of out of date materials and updated with new books and DVDs. The new 2013/14 courses will be the focus of the additions as there are no collection materials to support Web Design or Computer Programming, and only 5 to 9 books in each of the other new courses' subject areas (average ages 1973-2000). The Trinity Library budget has declined 8% over the last 5 years while the CPI has increased 19%. The 2012/13 Trinity Library budget for resources is: Print - $2500; Videos - $2500; Periodicals - $1500; e-books - $5000; Databases -$9205. b. The direct target audience for the Nurturing STEM project is the 549 young women ages 14-19 enrolled at Trinity High School and their teachers. (The indirect targets are our reciprocating interlibrary loan libraries.) Trinity is an accredited International Baccalaureate institution. Trinity students come from 158 different grade schools in 50 different suburbs and the city of Chicago. Trinity's enrollment is 51% White and 49% Minorities. One third of the students attend on full or partial scholarships. All Trinity graduates are accepted into post secondary education and 72% of the class of 2012 were awarded college scholarships (awards totaled $18 million). This project strives to meet the needs of Trinity students enrolled in STEM courses. In the fall of 2013, Oceanography, Biotechnology, Physiology, Physics of Light and Sound, Web Design, and Computer Programming II will be added to the Trinity curriculum. c. All incoming freshmen will be surveyed for career interests by the Guidance department. Students will choose a specific field to research during 5 days (6 hours) with the Trinity librarians during the Freshman Seminar research project. Students will use existing and new print and video resources to become familiar with the educational requirements, career expectations, and outlook for their chosen fields.

15. Outcome(s), evaluation(s), and Method(s): a. Propose one to four outcomes that will be achieved as a result of this project. Reflect outcomes as changes in knowledge, skills, attitudes or behavior of the target audience. b. For each outcome, propose at least one, but no more than five, reasonable evaluation strategies or measures that will determine the level of success in achieving the outcome. c. For each outcome, list at least one, but no more than seven, specific methods, activities, or services to be implemented (with details in Project Description) to achieve the desired outcome. b. Evaluation(s) a. Outcome 1 ACCESS: In accordance with ISL Goal 1.1: This grant will Track the increase in circulation statistics in STEM subjects allow for expanded access to quality STEM resources both within the Trinity Library to students, faculty, librarians, and print and video for Trinity High School students and faculty interlibrary loans to support STEM instruction and further interest in STEM careers in the school building and under the guidance of their teachers and librarians. To make these resources available to other libraries.

c. Method(s) to Achieve Outcome 1 Use professional journals and faculty input to inform the selection of high quality and high interest STEM books and videos. Compare month to month circulation reports and interlibrary loan statistics and adjust presentation techniques of materials accordingly to improve circulation. Collaborate with faculty to develop more meaningful common core research projects.

a. Outcome 2 LIFELONG LEARNING: In accordance with ISL Goal 2: Students will view libraries as a resource center that enables development of a lifelong interest initially ignited in the classroom. The usage of quality resources that meet the needs of a 21st century education will generate increased interest in STEM careers, college majors, and career paths. This outcome relates particularly to developing a threshold between the STEM curriculum and the Library.

b. Evaluation(s) Trinity librarians will conduct a survey of high school freshmen and seniors career interests and observe changes in the number of students interested in STEM over a three year time period.

c. Method(s) to Achieve Outcome 2 All incoming freshmen will be surveyed by the Guidance department to determine their career interests. They will then spend 5 days (6 hours) with the librarians during the Freshman Seminar Research project researching their prospective careers and being introduced to the new resources. Seniors of the class of 2013 will be surveyed in their homerooms about planned college majors and careers, and their use of STEM resources in the Trinity Library. This will serve as one benchmark to judge the success of the grant by determining the access to materials and STEM interest in a population that was not exposed to the new materials.

Page 8
