Wednesday UNIT: Culture GRADE LEVEL: Middle School INSTRUCTOR: Brooke Engel

- Teach SegmentAGENDA: I - Introduction: (5 minutes) -Explain Hip- Hop Heart Rate - How is it made to look so easy? II Lesson Focus: (25 minutes) 1. Warm- up mats- groups of ten or so- each has a mat with exercises on it and a giant mat is placed in the center of the gym that is the same thing. The mat in the middle has one dice and one bean bag per group. One group member will go roll the dice and move the bean bag, see the exercise, go back to the group and show them how it is done. Every student will go at least once. Each exercise will be done ten times. 2. Game: Hip Hop Mis-Match- Cards with a certain dance move will be scattered in the middle of the gym. Each student will go pick one random card and learn that dance move. Give them about 5 minutes to learn the move. Let them get in groups of six and put those six moves together in any order. This will be their dance. 3. Evaluation- the last 10 minutes of class let some of the groups perform the dance they have made up. ****Through out the entire lesson as well as the week the students will be in groups and the heart rate monitors will be borrowed from the sister school. The students will learn to use and keep track of what the heart rate and the range of heart rate is. It a lab while the dance and have fun learning about the culture. Facts: -Hip hop is a combination of several simple motions put together. - Young kids started dance groups to get off the streets and make their lives more productive. - When moving your body in this dance form, you have to let your body be free to move and not stiff. Accommodations: For those students who cannot move their bodies in a certain way, have them move their hands, feet or head to the beat of the music. Injured students can do what they can so that they can participate in the group, but wont perform, they will be the judges.

OBJECTIVES: Students will get to see what the American culture is about by participating in the dance that includes team work and creativity. Students will learn and understand the key facts about this culture and how the dance is incorporated into the mix and will be followed by a verbal memory quiz. Students will learn key parts of this culture through the facts provided, and coming up with a creative dance sequence, all will participate. EQUIPMENT: Facts 200 Hip hop dance moves TEACHING POINTS: -This activity is fun and allows them to use their creativity. Remind them that nothing is wrong, its about having fun and learning. They need to keep the body in free motion not stiff.
