This experience gave you some insight as to the planning, organization, and follow through that a principal faces on a daily basis. You can never be too prepared! Exp. Record #: 11526 Date submitted: 11/11/2012 Elizabeth Hogan approved on 11/12/2012 Cohort: UEN 2011

Briefly describe this field-based internship experience, including your specific role (1/2 page). My specific role in this experience was assistant high-school track and field coach. Each season we are given a budget to draw from. It rolls over each school year. As coaches we are responsible for purchasing uniforms, equipment, paying entry fees, and lining up the buses for the track team. Purchases needed a few weeks to be completed. In the school system a lot of paperwork is required along with approvals. It was my job to foresee the purchase needs and put in the purchase orders right away and early in order to have the needs of the track team fulfilled. During the Drake and State track meets, hotels would have to be booked along with school vans reserved. I was also apart of this process and even drove the school van to and from Des Moines with student athletes. Reflect on what you have learned from this experience, from mentor discussions, and how you will use this learning in future administrative leadership roles (no more than 1/2 page). I learned that being a good planner is vital in the school athletic setting. From my early teaching career I felt like I was planning only a week ahead sometimes. In the 4A athletic setting I was planning months ahead of time. I feel like this can be applied to the academic setting as well as a school leader. See what you have to accomplish by when and start planning and preparing for it way ahead of time. Do we need to raise scores by next May? Well then start planning for it in the previous June. Being organized and planned is a good skill to have as a school leader. Now to be able to professionally manage and be the instructional leader at the same time? That will be a challenge!
