    Primary congenital hypothyroidism is detected through newborn screening using a diagnostic algorithm. If screening shows elevated TSH levels, the baby is retested and if confirmed they are treated with levothyroxine replacement therapy. Early diagnosis and treatment prevents intellectual disability and growth failure associated with untreated congenital hypothyroidism.
