Essential/ Inquiry/ Driving Question Create one or two essential questions to guide the unit or series of lessons How did tombs reflect the beliefs, lifestyles and accomplishments of Ancient Egyptian rulers? How do artifacts about the dead provide clues about their life and accomplishments? Objectives: What Key Knowledge and Skills will students acquire as a result of this unit or lesson series? Content knowledge: Nile River was very important to ancient Egyptians Nile provided water, food and rich soil for farming Over thousands of years ancient Egypt went through periods of peace and war rulers of different lands fought to take control over land, people, and trade Ancient Egyptian society was divided into different classes, or groups of people Slaves were the lowest class of ancient Egyptian society Hieroglyphics an ancient system of symbols and pictures were used for writing The ruler of an ancient Egyptian kingdom was called a pharaoh Pharaohs were believed to communicate directly to the gods Pharaohs were blamed for bad harvests and natural disasters The last pharaoh of Egypt was Cleopatra who Process skills: examine artifacts that support various historical theories Make an argument supporting historical theories by referring to artifacts as evidence Understand that some mysteries cannot be solved but that clues help us piece together and evaluate theories Explain the process that was used in mummification and to create tombs Explain how the Egyptian belief in the afterlife impacted the way Egyptians live Understand that the preparations necessary for the afterlife fueled job creation- tomb builders, scribes and artists Conduct in-depth research on one Egyptian ruler Plan a tomb design and layout that is representative of the rulers beliefs, accomplishments and interests Use historical context and research to include artifacts that could be used for entertainment,

food, comfort, and worship Provide a written historically accurate justification for the tomb design and explanation of objects included Skills Necessary for Tomb Design and Construction: REQUIRED: create a rough draft (blueprint) that shows what the model will look like, what materials you will use and the projected size of the actual model Develop a working model that includes a tomb with 5 or more artifacts for the mummy's afterlife such as jewelry, perfume, clothes, food, vessel of water etc. and a protection spell written on a scroll and placed in the tomb. Develop a written report that explains who your pharaoh was, how you designed the tomb, the types of materials you used, and how each of the artifacts included in your tomb are essential to the pharaohs journey into the afterlife SKILLS CHOICE: Part A) Include a burial monument such as a pyramid or mastaba OR Include a visual representation of the surrounding environment such as deserts, the Nile River, gardens, crop fields, etc. Part B) Include 3 out 5 of the following tomb elements: Element 1: Construction: Appropriate Egyptian materials are included such as gold, polished stones, hardwoods, glass etc. Include historical reasoning for selecting these materials in written report. Tomb has a floor and 3 or more walls or other creative design. Element 2: Egyptian Mythology Drawings:

Creatively depicts Egyptian mythology on all walls with at least 4 drawings. Uses the primary colors red, blue and yellow, commonly used in Ancient Egypt. Mythology should be relevant to the rulers life and beliefs. The connection between the drawings and rulers life should be explained in the written report. Element 3: Hieroglyphics: Neatly written on the tomb design project. Contains 6 or more symbols. These symbols should include the rulers name or have other special importance for the leader. Your reasons for including specific hieroglyphics should be included in your written report. Element 4: Canopic Jars: Contains 4 canopic jars that are neatly labeled with the items inside representing organs for the ruler. Include a description of the religious purpose of each jar in the written report. Element 5: Alter and Sarcophagus: Contains an alter and sarcophagus with some kind of mummy that are creatively decorated with elaborate drawings of Egyptian Mythology and Hieroglyphics.
