it has to do with a new field of psychology that he created almost singlehandedly, called Free Trait Theory. (Cain, 209)

My Response
Susan Cain used this quote while she was explaining how a university professor, Professor Little, who is a strong introvert is able to speak in public so smoothly and clearly. Professor Little explained to Susan that it all had to do with something that he called the Free Trait Theory which he says gives introverts the ability to act more like extroverts at times when they feel something is important enough. I feel like Susan is going to use the knowledge of the Free Trait Theory that she has learned from the Professor and she will go into more depth explaining to us the importance of introverts being able to switch their reserved personalities off for a little while when necessary. When I read this quote at the beginning of another one of Susans wonderful examples of people she has met and worked with, I wanted to know what the word ebullient meant. I knew that Susan was in the middle of describing a happily married couple of one introvert and one extrovert when I noticed this so I tried to look at the word in context, but it was no help, no other words around it could help me to understand, thats when I decided I would search it on my own. I looked up the word in a dictionary and officially it means, overflowing with fervor, enthusiasm, or excitement; high-spirited. After finding the meaning I was able to understand why the character, Emily, explained that her husband made her feel happy and alive. It was because he was overly happy himself all of the time. This is a combined quote, I took a part from two different quotes about the same character and put them together. The reason I did this was because the first thing that I did think of when I read that Ethan was tall, skinny and unathletic was I thought of Harry Potter. Being one of my favourite movies and book series, the subject that Susan was describing fit this role perfectly, not only because of the way he looked, but because she described that his parents never understood him, which is what had happened to Harry, his aunt and uncle never understood him. I decided to add the second part because later on in the next paragraph, Susan put in a quote from a doctor who said Ethan was a classic Harry Potter kid, when I read that I giggled because I had been thinking the exact same thing. This quote really got me, it hit me in the heart because it reminded me exactly of myself when I was younger. Susan had decided to use an example of a young 7 year old, who normally at school was pretty social and outgoing, who started to get bullied by another student. However, when Isabel was bullied she over thought everything that had been said to her. She would analyze every last word to try to get to the roots of the bullying. The reason that this quote reminded me so much of myself, is because

Clarify: Look closer when something is confusing

Emily, for her part, treasures Gregs ebullient nature; he makes her feel happy and alive. (Cain, 225)

Visualize: Imagine a picture or movie in your mind as you read

Ethan was tall, skinny, unathletic; he looked like a stereotypical nerd...'He was the classic Harry Potter kid'(Cain, 242)

Make Connections: Connect what youre reading to something else

Even though the bully usually picked on other kids, Isabel spent hours dissecting the meaning of the bullys words, what her true intentions had been (Cain, 243)

Summarize: Retell what happened in the story so far

when I was younger, probably Isabels age I used to get bullied at school, not because I was loud and fun, but because I was the opposite, I remember always being upset about it for long periods of time because I remember over analyzing just like Isabel had done. I always wanted to figure out what exactly the bully intended, I would pick out every word and I would think and think about what could have caused them to act the way they did. Now, I dont get bullied as much, however, I do a lot of the time still think about things in way too much detail. Section four of Susan Cains book, Quiet is really a self-help portion of the book. Susan started the last three chapters by introducing her readers to an idea that they are at certain times able to forget about the type of person they are for a little while to pretend they are of the opposite type. She goes into depth on the right times to act more extroverted, and to what extent by giving examples of real life clients who she has had. Susan then goes into chapter 10 which she has called The Communication Gap, in which she explains how to go about speaking to people of the opposite types, she gives pointers on body language, words to use and other things that you should keep in mind when starting a conversation with either and introvert or an extrovert, she again gave a couple examples. Lastly, Susan finished the book off with a chapter giving tips especially to role models and teachers on how to teach the quiet children of our world, to make sure that they are being heard and their voices arent being drowned out. She then concludes the eleventh chapter with an entire book conclusion re-stating everything she had already said about the two types of people throughout the book.
