COURSE INFORMATION
Course Description

CIMT 543 involves planning, preparing, producing, and evaluating media for use in an instructional environment. This course is performance-driven. You will create instructional materials using various computer technologies. The course requires you to

integrate theories into application through using technology. You are expected to learn how to respond to the needs of a rapidly changing technological society.
Instructional Goals

Upon the completion of this course, you will be able to: Demonstrate a proficiency in designing and producing instruction using various computer related technologies including application software, digital graphics, audio, video, multimedia, and the Web. Apply various design strategies for instructional purposes, including the ASSURE model for the lesson plan design, visual principles for the presentation and display design, and technology integration for audio, video, and a computer lab design. Discuss various issues in media technology, including terms, definitions, concepts, design, applications, research, and integration. Communicate effectively using various media including audio, visual, video, computer, and the Web. Enhance professional writing and research skills including grant proposal writing or research paper writing.

Representative Teaching Methods

This course is performance-driven, emphasizing on the design for instructional purposes. All the projects are individual projects. However, each week, you will have a group discussion activity on a number of topics related to your project(s), so that you will help one another through peer interaction. Your learning performance will be evaluated based on your individual projects and group discussions. The main purpose of CIMT 543 is to assist you in the production of your teaching/training materials to enable you to become more adroit in the creation, use and evaluation of instructional media. It is designed to offer you the opportunity to pursue a variety of production techniques in greater depth. The course also helps you with research, presentation, and grant writing skills that enhance your credential for professional development. One step to success in integrating technology in teaching is to become familiar with a wide range of instructional strategies and passive and interactive media and know how and when to use each. If you are skilled in the use of technology in teaching, you will be able to integrate and use various methodologies in group settings and with individualized learning. This course will enable you to become more technology oriented and apply the content to your teaching-learning situations.

For the public library students, this course should enable you to become skilled in production techniques so that you will be able to apply them when presenting to groups, designing educational displays and making your library more "visually friendly."
Project Guidelines

There are nine projects in this class. For each project, the project requirements, points, and deadline are provided in the Assignment box in addition to this syllabus. The users guide and the URLs for downloading software applications are provided in Lai and Changs book. Project rubrics are available on the Assignment page. Neither revised projects nor late projects will be accepted unless otherwise announced. It is your responsibility and to your own benefit to turn in a high-quality project before it is due. Plan ahead and never leave todays work until tomorrow.

Course Requirements

* Read textbooks * Meet all project due dates * Produce quality content of projects * Participate in discussion activities * Additional requirements/projects designated by the instructor This is a 500-level course. You are expected to create thorough, reflective treatment of the projects with signs of synthesis when possible. More specifically, the instructor will evaluate your projects with the following things in mind: Attention to instructions -- This criterion should not really require explanation; however, experience requires me to call attention to it. If you feel that you do not understand an assignment, ask for clarification. Depth of treatment -- This criterion tends to be a bit more subjective and is more difficult to define. Simply, make sure you provide adequate coverage of whatever is called for in an assignment. Remember, this is a graduate-level course. Submitted on time -- Given the nature of online/distance work, it is all too easy to procrastinate and develop an out of sight, out of mind habit. As it is mentioned in the Project Guideline section, no late projects will be accepted. Make sure that you will check the project deadline frequently. Creativity/insights/original thinking -- Again, another subjective criterion. Some examples of what the instructor is looking for here are interesting analogies and metaphors in your descriptions and discussions of topics. Also, taking existing information and combining it with your own ideas to come up with original and logical thoughts. Writing mechanics/organization/attention to details -- Poorly written projects/papers will receive a poor grade. Use practical

tools like Spell Check and Grammar Check; however, they alone will not catch everything. If you know you are not a good writer, ask a colleague or friend to review your draft before submitting. If you are near a campus or public library that offers a writing lab, use the service! For those students whose first language is not English, please seek writing and editing assistance prior to submitting assignments when it is necessary. While most of the project options for the course require no particular style manual, several require formal citations. In those cases, be sure to use a style manual, APA Style, 5th ed. Each project MUST have information clearly identifying you, the course number, and the date. In addition, pages should be numbered.
