History and Mission: Whitehead Road School is a public elementary school founded in 1963 in Athens, Georgia. Our staff of 39 teachers serves 689 students in grades pre-k through fifth. Our school has made Adequate Yearly Progress every year that this measure has been in use and is classified as a title one school. The schools mission is to actively engage early learners in order to develop readers, writers, and thinkers. Amount and program to be funded: Amount Requested: 470.40 We would like to purchase 20 copies of five different titles that are popular with boys. These books would be used in small group reading instruction in grades 3-5, and are aimed at engaging boys that are reluctant or disinterested readers. We hope that by offering our male readers an opportunity to read high interest books we can encourage them to read and thus improve their reading skills. Use of Funding: Funding will be used to purchase 100 books that will enhance our reading education program. Teachers in grades 3-5 would have access to the sets of books for small group reading instruction.
