1. Curriculum Standards Addressed: Common Core Standards PKRL 3 With prompting and support, identify characters and major events in a story. EEDA Standards 4. Supporting character education including but not limited to the following: respect for authority and for others, honesty, self-control, cleanliness, courtesy, good manners, cooperation, citizenship, patriotism, courage, fairness, kindness, self-respect, compassion, diligence, good work ethics, sound educational habits, generosity, punctuality, cheerfulness, patience, sportsmanship, loyalty, and virtue. 2. Cross Curricular Connections: Common Core Standards PKMD 2 Directly compare two objects with a measurable attribute in common to see which object has more of/less of the attribute and describe the difference. For example, directly compare the heights of two children and describe one child as taller/shorter. 3. Instructional Objective(s) Criteria: With prompting and support, students will successfully name main characters and major events in a story. 4. Assessment(s) of the Objectives: Before: Which students are respectful towards others? Which students can recall events in a story that has been read to them? During: Which students know right from wrong when speaking to others? After: Student is/is not able to name main characters and major events in the story. Prerequisites (Prior Knowledge): Students should be able to ask and answer questions about key details in a text. 7. Procedures: Step 1: Introduce the text to class Today we are going to read Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes. Do any of you know what a Chrysanthemum is? A flower. A lot of flowers start growing in the spring time. Do you know what else happens in the spring time? Easter. Step 2: Begin reading book Answer questions if there are any. Ask questions like: o Are the students in the class being nice? o Is that how we should act if someone is different? Step 3: When finished reading book, as a class, we will list the main character(s) in the book and put the major events of the book in order on the smart board. Major characters-Chrysanthemum, Victoria, Mrs. Twinkle Major events o Chrysanthemum loves her name o Chrysanthemum goes to school and gets made fun of o Chrysanthemum tells her parents school is no place for her o The students were introduced to Mrs. Twinkle o Roles were assigned for the class musical, Chrysanthemum gets made fun of because she is the daisy o Mrs. Twinkle tells the student her name, Delphinium Twinkle o Everyone wants to have a name after a flower Step 4: After we finish the whole group activity, I will explain what we will be doing in small groups. When we go to small groups, we are going to decorate our own piece of paper. You can decorate it any way you want because we are all different and that is ok. When we all finish, I will put all the pieces together to create a puzzle. We will be able to see everyones paper and how no two pieces are alike, just like us.

Step 5: Call 4 or 5 students to a table to complete the small group activity. Dismiss others to centers. Step 6: Tell the students in the first small group what they should do on their paper. Start an example of what they can decorate their papers like, reminding them to be creative and know that everyone will have different drawings. Give them paper, markers, and crayons to begin decorating. Step 7: When students are finished, make sure they write their name on their paper and collect them. Step 8: Call another small group over and repeat step 5-7 until all students have done the activity. Step 9: When everyone is done, attach all the papers together to create a puzzle. Step 10: Show the entire class the puzzle that was created and remind them that everyone created a different piece of the puzzle and they werent the same. Tell them that they are like the puzzle, none of them are alike and that it is ok to be different. 8. Accommodations: Spanish speakers- know how to say key words in Spanish. Preferred seating for students that have hearing and behavioral problems. 9. References: Common Core Standards- ELA for Pre-K, EEDA Standards
