Lesson 3: Identifying the Letter L

Curriculum Standard(s) Addressed: PKFS 2c: With guidance and support recognize when words share phonemes (sounds) and repeat the common phoneme. PKFS 3a: Demonstrate a beginning understanding of links between letters and sounds. Cross Curricular Connections: Music the shared reading will be sung as a song during whole group instruction Art/ Developing fine motor skillsduring the small group activity the students will work in their ABC workbooks with crayons and stickers

Instructional Objective(s) Criteria: The students will be able to identify and highlight the letter L after being introduced to the letter.

Assessment(s) of the Objective: Pre-assessment: Based on a previous assessment of letter and letter sound identification. Questions to ask: Do they recognize the upper case letter? Do they recognize the lower case letter? Do they recognize the letter sound?

During assessment: The students will go through L picture cards and pronounce words that begin with the letter L. The students will also participate in a shared reading that focuses on the letter L. Questions to ask: Do they look at the letter and identify it as the letter L in upper and lower case form? Do they pronounce the L sound correctly? Did they participate in saying the words on the L picture cards? Did they participate in the shared reading?

Post-assessment: After the shared reading, the students will individually identify and highlight Ls from the reading. Questions to ask: Did they participate in the activity? Did they highlight the correct letter? Did they recognize the letter in upper and lower case? Materials: Assessment checklist Pencil/pen Smart board L picture cards Written shared reading Pointer Highlighter tape ABC workbooks Crayons Stickers

Prerequisites: The students must have the fine motor skills to be able to place highlighter tape and use writing tools. Procedures: 1) Introduce the letter L by writing it in upper and lower case on the smart board 2) Ask the students what the letter is and what sound it makes; give time to answer (some should be able to answer) 3) Tell them the letter and the letter sound and have them repeat it on the count of three 4) Go through the L picture cards one at a time, emphasizing the lllll sound, while the students echo

5) Have the students say the L picture cards together after all of them have been introduced 6) Introduce the shared reading A Little Lucky Leprechaun 7) Read through the shared reading/Echo read /Choral read 8) Model with the tune (to the tune of If Youre Happy And You Know It) 9) Sing as a whole class 10) Explain the highlighting activity 11) Model the first highlight 12) Invite the students up to the front one by one to highlight the Ls in the shared reading 13) Read through the shared reading once more emphasizing the highlighted Ls 14) Dismiss into small groups 15) Work on the letter L in their ABC workbooks

Accommodations: For students with behavioral or attention problems, have an assistant nearby during the whole group instruction Have students with vision problems sit near the front Pay special attention to pronunciation for those with speech impediments
