Lesson 4 Review

Lesson Topic: Community Workers Date of the Lesson: March 25, 2013

1) State one objective and describe the ways in which your students met that objective. The objective of the lesson was to familiarize the students with different community workers. As a class, we sang a song and read a book that discussed different types of jobs and workers. The students met the objective by correctly matching the community worker with the tools of that job and identifying the worker by name. 2) Describe how you sequenced the lesson so that your students were guided from their known experiences to new learning. The pre-assessment showed that few of the students could name different jobs. The different careers were introduced through an interactive song and a short read aloud. As a class we recalled some of the different careers that we talked about in the song and story and the students brainstormed careers other than the ones that were mentioned. 3) Describe the kind(s) of groupings you used and the effectiveness of your use of grouping. The entire lesson took place as a whole group. The interactive song, story, collaborative brainstorming, and the matching activity all worked effectively in a whole group setting. The students were able to work together as a class to come up with ideas and learn more about community workers. 4) Describe one way in which you addressed the individual needs of one child or a small group of children. There was one student in the class who was abnormally active which ended up causing a disruption. I chose, instead of isolating the child, to include them more in the lesson and activity. As it turned out, that is what the child needed. The student stopped blurting out answers and moving around and began to really focus on the lesson. They even started out our brainstorming activity with an original answer.

5) If your management of the lesson presented difficulties, what were they and how did you handle them? There were no difficulties managing the lesson. The students remained attentive and well-behaved. Even during the matching activity where the students walked around the classroom to find their partner, they remained calm and quiet. 6) Describe your assessment process and the ways in which the process provided/did not provide you with an accurate evaluation of how well the children learned the content. The assessments provided a rather accurate evaluation of the students understanding. The pre-assessment took place one-on-one with the students. I asked them questions about jobs that help people, questions about what their parents did, and questions to make them think about different careers. During the pre-assessment, many of the students were only able to name two or three different careers. With the matching activity assessment, I saw that all the students were able to identify at least seven different careers. 7) Describe the manner in which your lesson addressed more than one of the developmental realms of the child. The interactive song and story touched on auditory development. The students had to listen closely, think about what they heard, and respond. Visual development was addressed with the picture cards that depicted the different careers discussed. The students were about to get in some kinesthetic movement with the matching activity because they had to walk across the room to find their partner.

8) Identify the dimension of multicultural education that was most critical for you to consider as you taught this lesson. Why do you believe your chosen dimension was most important for this learning experience? The most critical dimension would probably be empowering school culture. The students personal experience played a big part in what they knew about ca reers coming into the classroom. When we were brainstorming different careers, it was interesting to see what the children came up with based on what they had seen in their personal life.

9) When you teach your next lesson, what teaching strategy will you work to improve? I will work to improve my wording of some questions. When discussing careers with the students, their answers and confused faces showed me that my questions were not being relayed to them as I intended. I need to thoroughly think through the questions I will use beforehand. 10) How would you rate your implementation of this lesson? Why would you rate your lesson this way? I would rate the implementation of this lesson as satisfactory. There were some things such as questions and explanations that could have been improved on. Overall the lesson went well and most of the students seemed to grasp the concept by the end. The students really enjoyed the interactive song and the matching activity.
