produces precious stones such as sapphires, pearls and jade. Rubies are the biggest earner; 90% of the world's rubies come from the country, whose red stones are prized for their purity and hue.

Why is it called Myanmar and Burma at the same time?


In 1989, the ruling military junta changed its name from Burma to Myanmar; a year after thousands were killed in the suppression of a popular uprising. Internationally, both names are recognised.
